I wanted to know from your experiences whether it's worth buying computer components via Amazon or similar places. Are there additional taxes / duties to be paid if shipped with a courier and if so, how much (percentage guideline if applicable).

Also, how does it affect the warranties?

Add items to your basket and go to checkout, amazon will give you a total which includes shipping, duties & vat.

Depends on what you import, if something goes wrong it has to be rma'd back to the states. I would not hesitate to buy a cpu for example as it's extremely rare for it to fail.

Does Amazon cover RMA costs if delivered to SA? If you use a PO box US and forward to SA, understand not, but if direct delivery?

Of course the time it takes for that is an issue, considering South African customs.

Amazon is cool. They give all the fees upfront on checkout. To return they pay the first 25usd or something, the rest you must pay, if any and then ask for refund. Of course it can take up to 30 days for them to receive the item and then only process it. After the shipping and duty fees it might be cheaper to get it local though. I've bought from them but haven had to return an item yet.

Items can be returned within 30 days of receipt of delivery using the Online Returns Center. It can take up to 25 days for an item to reach us once you return it. Once the item is received at our fulfillment center, it takes 2 business days for the refund to be processed and 3-5 business days for the refund amount to show up in your account.

Your return label will require you to return the item at your own expense. Amazon will automatically refund up to $20 for return postage costs on receipt of the item. If your return postage costs exceed $20, you may contact our Customer Service Center to request a refund of the remaining postage cost. If you return a defective, damaged or incorrect item, you’ll be refunded the full postage cost, as well as your Import Fees Deposit, once your return is processed.

Pro-tip, get a few quotes, show them you took the cheapest option and it was still over $20 and it is very likely you will get more refunded.

Amazon is very customer centric.

First place where you should look is for buying abroad is Amazon, some people suggest AliExpress though. Ebay is way too pricy. With Amazon I got all what I need quite fast and without any problems ever. Be sure to read reviews to some parts.
