R 18-00 DSTV offering here soon

IMO this is good news for the low income market, and yes the decoder & installation charges are still high, but there are many competing installers that will lose out if they don't drop their prices. So why is it that MonoChoice doesn't offer MNet [-]Lite[/-] on DSTV Compact?

Considering that the MNet channel is only available with DSTV Premium, one can only conclude that MonoChoice is fleecing those customers that want to watch some of the stuff on the MNet channel.

Before anyone asks, the answer is no, I still refuse to watch the likes of Ecoli, Jacob's Cross and other soapie crap that spews out over the MNet channel.

:D:sick:

When competition comes to the party suddenly Multichoice wants to cater for the lower end of the market:rolleyes:

IPTV would be basically the same as Cable-tv in USA. U can purchase specific channels and only those would be available to you at a certian price.

That would work for me. Pay-tv is the way to go

Problem were gonna have with Multi-choice is this.

They are not gonna release a package that will offer MNET, with all the movie channels, and just the sport channels and maybe MTV with discovery and a few other lekka channels.

Reason: THey will then lose almost all the DSTV Premium customers to a much cheaper and viable service.

If u could pull the stats of channels being watched regular on DSTV Premium, u would prolly see that Mnet, Movie channels, the Sports channels, and also MTV, Discovery and even maybe the Food Channel and Cartoon/Kiddy shows are most often watched.

The MNet Lite channel will consist of general entertainment content, based on re-runs of the standard MNet service, and will have ‘Open Weekends’.

aah i see now, close down "open time" [free service] , and then relaunch it under a subscription based service for real cheap.... Nice going government, power to the masses now eh?

Mind you, what stops MNet to ask R1 subscription and re-open open time ? Rather, what was the problem with open time again? Because it was free?

Only in South Africa would a company take something that is free (SABC, ETV etc), package it up and then charge for it.

Come on....mnet lite.....lol! mnet "full" is not something to write home about.

Maybe not the best channels, but I think this service is actually released very close to or below cost. Just the billing must come close to R 18-00. I think this is a good move by Multichoice...competition is sweet :D

Hmm.. you could get SABC and E-TV (all the public channels) with any DSTV smartcard.. I just paid a once-off activation fee and that was it...

This looks like they are now charging R18 for something they never charged for in the past.

um, wasn't that an annual fee?

I will probably go for this... it's not a bad price, even just to get better reception on those free to air channels.

I completely agree with armitage - I want to be able to choose the channels I want. At the moment I pay R440 or whatever for about 10 channels that I watch all the time.

i was wondering the same thing. it would be cool if they do.
and what does "open weekends" mean? will that be access to the "real" mnet for the duration of the weekend?

MNet Open Time was crap anyway - soapies and boring sitcoms from the global reject bin.

Yep, except now you will pay R18 for it instead of getting it for free ;).

:D:D:D:D

Not to talk about propaganda being forced upon you for R18, quite a bargain, I should think...

naaaaaaaaaaaa... I'm not interested.

Who knows what other strings they might have attached?

My package wish -

A channel to watch the Olympic games ( summer and winter ), World Cup soccer, rugby and cricket, Wimbledon and Sky news.

There is nothing else worth paying for.

Either that, or all the main sports channels and Sky for R 100 a month.

Wondering - will this ' cheap ' package come via HDTV .... requiring a new decoder, new lnb and 90 cm dish ?

Also if 2010 will be on SABC channels, R18.00 would be a really cheap way to watch.

Well, thats a monopoly and thats how business is done. And no, DSTV are not ****ers. They arent unethical either.

OH YES THEY ARE! They are liers and cheating scumbags as well with the worst service second to Telscum and full of BS with utter disregard for what their subscribers forking out a fortune may or may not want to watch!

To this day we still don't know what happened to the overnight cancellation of sci-fi, one of the most highly watched channels, except for their "no longer viable in southern africa" cr@p lying explanation

As a matter of interest, does anyone actually watch DSTV's TCM channel on a regular basis?

TCM is one of the many DSTV channels I have zero interest in - B&W & other colourised ancient films [1980s or older] simply don't interest me.

Nope just the sports and science (Discovery, NGC etc.) channels, audio channels, and maybe BBC occasionally. Other than that they don't show anything that I haven't seen before, or anything I'd be interested in.

They had a sci-fi classics series on a couple of months ago that was pretty cool.
'50's versions of War of the Worlds & 10,000 Leagues , Them, The Amazing Transparent Man

If ther are any regular watchers I doubt they'd be willing to admit it though

So does the R18 include the stoopid SABC tv license? No. So what the **** is the point? R18 bucks so MNet can inundate us with their constant ads and lousy locally produced productions? pffffft.
