R5.78 per GB shaped ADSL data package: Openweb

Openweb continues to innovate

Users are however warned that peer-to-peer and torrent services are shaped, and that the account will only work from the day of purchase until 15 November 2010. Any unused data will be lost on 15 November

*sigh* innovation in screwing the customer yeah ......

This special from Openweb compares very favorably with similar offerings in the market like Afrihost’s 50GB ADSL accounts which retail at R475 per month, Axxess’ 50 GB DSL Lite service priced at R950 and Web Africa’s 55 GB data bundles priced at R2 450 per month.

You're comparing Open Web's SHAPED offering to the other providers' UNSHAPED packages? You really should share with us whatever it is that you're smoking, as it's clearly very potent stuff.

When will ISPs learn that we don't like these "BUT"s / "Except"s

We have Unshaped Internet! but its shaped for P2P/Torrents. it's cheap too, Except it expires soon

For that price just spend the extra R64 and go Mweb uncapped. Afrihost's speed is awful in comparison.

Not when you are talking torrents on the capped accounts. I regularly switch between the two - Mweb I get maybe 30KB/s on 4MB uncapped account and with Afrihost I get 380-400KB/s on 4MB Capped 100GB account. Both download equally well via HTTP/HTTPS - both run 400KB/s+ with multiple connections. It's just with the torrents that you see the MWEB shaping kicking in - and this is without a high monthly usage figure. So when you wanna do torrents go Afrihost - otherwise go MWeb and do the Easynews thing.

*sorts through the 22gb he downloaded on mweb uncapped yesterday*

Did you say shaped and capped?

*hits snooze button*

+1

+1!! Lol that's me right there!

OpenWeb is running out of things to do. The CEO's are scrambling as profits are hitting record lows. You best drop those prices and focus on working on what the CUSTOMER NEEDS instead of your pockets. Only way to save this company!

I have this 50gb account and i must say first impressions do not look good at all.I got a 4mb line and im getting max speeds for about 100kbps only. it is not just shaped but shaped to a point where performance is dismal! I tried my afrihost account and was back to 440kbps instantly.. It also appears news protocol is heavily shaped as i cannot even connect to Astraweb... Pathetic really. I do not recommend getting this product. Will provide updates if the situation improves.

Just bought my account and am getting full speed on Http, and around 2.5Mbps on torrents. I like!
