R56000 bill for diskspace usage

Not defending them or their pricing, but their billing system is probably fully automated.

Fully automated and full of ****. It's buggy as hell. I've raised billing issues with them many times. Card not being debited. So the domain expired. Even thou it is set to auto renew. 1-Grid goes ahead and take's down the other 20+ domains that are not expired/paid up.

Hi SYNERGY,

They use whmcs which isn't really buggy, unless you mingle with core files and run an outdated version.

If you have 20 domains you're probably a reseller. So most likely one invoice was not paid so the entire account was suspended which held all other domains/accounts (within cPanel)

In all fairness, there is simply no way to monitor invoices or suspensions until the client raises a query that something went belly up. It's not like hosting companies have an account manager for every client, unless off course you have some SLA contract and you pay top dollar

Not my issue. If their system didn't debit me as set on the control panel, don't suspend my whole account.

Never had this issue with Serv or Web Africa.

I'll pass, thanks.

Brought this issue up a Domain Admin and your billing team. No one got back to me with a satisfactory answer/response.

Had a call from their big boss. Some billing system went bust and sent out these invoices! Thank you lord! Must say they have dealt with it very nicely.

Sole reason why I'm moving away from them this year... Been bust for a while.

Look I know people on here are having a hissy fit in the comments, but I don't see how any level headed person would want to host locally. They are expensive compared to international options and the service is practically identical.

Host what exactly? Websites or email?

Websites we always suggest hosting locally as any support issues are easily resolved.

Email is easy...MS Online Exchange

Do you have any idea what it will cost to host a site like YouTube in SA as an example? Depending on your needs, but if you have to send out huge amounts of data. Hosting locally is retarded.

I think your example of hosting YouTube locally is retarded, quite frankly.

You cannot generalize like that....

I'm pretty sure this thread was leaning more to smaller hosting, like SME website etc.

Not generalizing at all.

Capacity needed would determine where you should host. Also things like content. Local hosting companies don't host adult content as an example. There are great arguments for local and abroad. claiming local is the way to go is generalizing.

I've been hosting overseas for 14 years and not once had support issues not resolved in an acceptable timeframe. Log a ticket - done.

Bandwidth wise, practical free since 99% of the traffic would go over NAP Africa, this is why the largest content providers plug into NAP.

PS: Youtube is already plugged into NAP and servicing south africans :P

After many personal calls and apologies from 1Grid and promises to fix their broken system, one month later, another R56000 bill! This time with little response or explanation.

This is after we moved half the email accounts away. Again no notice, no warning and no way to even manage the accounts or set limits, since their web panel is always broken. Besides the fact that you can't see the size of the mailboxes or get a report even if you beg.

Perhaps our only course of action is moving and an attorney now, Jade@SA. Perhaps your client and I can work together?

Really believe the problem with IT in South Africa is the lack of qualified people.

Hi Pete

I’ll have a chat to our client and see if he’s still experiencing the same but based on the conversation we had in December he quickly moved the majority of his services over to his reseller hosting package on our servers.

Going back to a previous comment you made in which you were told that their billing system had a hiccup, clearly this is not case given that you have run into the same issue again.

I was waiting for an update to see whether there would be further complaints as based on the info that was provided to me this wasn’t a once off and dates differ.

Our client was debuted in December, yours the month after and it’s still ongoing.

Whmcs has a setting on the service type to collect disk space and bandwidth usage and bill for overages based on a provided monetary value - so this is not a billing hiccup at all - may be human error, how ever you would have expected them to have resolved this now after a few months.

I’ll get back to and advise regarding our client.
