Racist AIDS tweet 'joke' causes outrage

News24 had the same article. Referred to Twitter as Tweeter. "Tweeter had posts by angry users slamming her Tweet". They just keep failing.

She bad mouthed London too just before the Africa tweet and someone said her father is a South African billionaire.

Some of the pics on twitter are pretty funny

if nothing else, her pr skills are going to be put to the test now !

Not too sure about that.
A few minutes of fun with a cigar never did Monica Lewinsky's career any harm.

In today's world of hyper political correctness she was a bit rash to allude to a fact that the world would rather ignore:

Africa disproportionately bears the burden of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Although only 11% of the world's population lives in Africa, roughly 67% of those living with HIV/AIDS are in Africa. (1,2) In Africa, there were 22.4 million people living with HIV and 1.9 million new HIV infections in 2008. An estimated 14 million children in Africa have been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS. (2)

You obviously didn't read her twit. But anywhere...

I think you could accuse her of being an idiot or racist but you're a bit wet behind the ears if you believe that's what she really thinks.

I wish people would have a little more humour on the Internet.

If Ricky Gervais made that joke (which he somewhat did with that Liam Neeson skit) everyone would have laughed it up.

I figure it was pretty funny, if you can accept the humour in it and not take yourself too seriously.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone's career tank during a trans-Atlantic flight before. To have been a fly on the wall during that flight.

3RD UPDATE, 1:25 PM: Justine Sacco has been swiftly sacked by Barry Diller‘s IAC a day after posting her controversial AIDS Tweet. “The offensive comment does not reflect the views and values of IAC,” the company said in a statement Saturday. “We take this issue very seriously, and we have parted ways with the employee in question. There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally. We hope, however, that time and action, and the forgiving human spirit, will not result in the wholesale condemnation of an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core.”

What could be worse?

Take off from Atlanta after sending a 'witty' comment. Spend the next 12 hours watching yourself become a internet meme and lose your job.
OR
Only finding out the full repercussions of that tweet when you land in the continent you just insulted.

Feck the world is really mad! It's so sick. A stupid woman lost her job because of a stupid "loose cannon" tweet yet here locally Zuma is still in power, criminal Malema is still driving an expensive BMW too fast and wears dark specs, the ANC create racist laws while crime, murders rape and corruption soar sky high!

Our priorities are just fecked!

Nobody knew who she was. She had 100 followers…that’s it. It only brought “disrepute” to IAC once people with too much time on their hands decided to broadcast the tweet and seek to destroy her because of it. This mob mentality of going after anyone and everyone when they offend suddenly delicate sensibilities is getting out of hand. People have been saying dumb things for years, but now it seems we believe they should atone for them with their livelihoods.

I don't get what your mean. Should she get away with what she said because in SA Malema and Zuma get away with similar behaviour?

Welcome to the desert of the real. Normal rules apply here and upvotes are verboten.

NO, he's saying Zuma, Malema and our local 'leadership' should get what they deserve. Not that hard to fathom.

Perhaps this incident will help others see 'social' media for the anti-social scum its become.

Remember, this is the same platform used every day to laugh at others misfortunes or rip off mentally retarded children.

Give me anonymity on the web any day. And don't tell me you have nothing to hide, everyone has skeletons.

The self righteous masses saw an opportunity to feel all powerful and take her out. Karma is on its way.

If she was a public figure, I'd say she should know better. I guess to her company and small business circle they enjoy, she was.
