Six km out of town at the border.... its difficult for you okes that have not been in a sandstorm to understand....
You wake up in the morning with no wind....but the sand is sitting in the air...blocking the sun...waiting for the day to start...then the wind starts and everything starts to move...everything turns a mars orange colour and sand gets everywhere..View attachment 717349View attachment 717351

As previously noted, conditions over the Western Cape are changing sharply, with cooler temperatures already present over Cape Town this evening (Fri 27th). A well developed Black South Easter (a type of cutoff low) will pass along the southern Cape coast on Sun 29th. Not much rain is expected for Cape Town itself, but very heavy rain (50-100mm in 24 hours) is predicted for parts of the Garden Route and adjacent mountains:

That storm caused damaged to the main line to the town and we have just been informed to expect power outages to effect repairs...

This morning's satellite image gives a good overview of the well developed cutoff-low. Moderate to heavy rain will occur in places along the southern Cape coast during today (Sun 29th), as the storm rotates and moves slowly from west to east:

The predicted rainfall distribution has changed somewhat (as often happens with such events). Places further inland such as Oudtshoorn, and perhaps even (drought stricken) Beaufort West, are likely to experience rain today:

Raining heavily in Villiersdorp and some rain in Hanover district which is north of BFW. Only light rain at moment. Rained yesterday in George at the airport. The wedding in Somerset West was disrupted a bit by the heavy winds. Not cold even warm with plenty of gusts.

We had a crazy thunderstorm and downpour in Hartenbos area this morning. All but destroyed most of the complex roads when rainwater system could not handle the about 80mm of rain that came down.

More heavy rain forecasted for this afternoon.

Thanks for the photos! That looks like a new development with poor site layout, built on an existing drainage channel. Never underestimate the power of running water...

Estate is about 15 years old. Actually pretty well designed with lots of drainage and storm water channels.

With a lot less rain than normally in the area the problem is that the drainage gets blocked with debris, with no rain to regularly wash all the crap out.

But then again not many systems would have been able to handle the amount of water that came rushing down.

Hartenbos also got a few new fresh water lakes.

Thanks for the details, which make a lot of sense. Hartenbos does not have any proper rivers, and torrential rain is not common. When I said 'new', I meant developed since the last 100-year flood...

Will post pics of an example of incredibly stupid design of a parking area and office premises in an upmarket office complex development in Bellville/Durbanville.

It bucketed down yesterday morning at Theewaterskloof 8am - 9am, the runoff from that downpour is going to fill the dam nicely today

The SAWS reports moderately heavy rain in a few places in the southern Cape. Due to limited weather stations, the heaviest falls will not be recorded on official gauges. See: http://www.weathersa.co.za/images/data/climate/nr_daily_rai.pdf

Highest include George 55mm, Knysna 42mm, Plettenberg Bay 35mm, etc. Also of note (in drought hit areas) were Addo Elephant Park 25mm, Uniondale 25mm, Beaufort West 12mm, Oudtshoorn 6mm, etc.
