The town is pretty quiet which is bad for a long weekend. Our own Airbnb guests for tonight and tomorrow night cancelled because we can’t guarantee they will have hot water. We have solar and can manage the lights and power, but the overcast clouds and rain are making it so that we can’t make any kind of promise wrt to the geysers.

I’ve seen quite a few shops closed as well. It’s certainly having a big effect on all corners of the town.

The Vodacom network has started to show strain today, we struggled to make calls and can only imagine it’s this, and earlier our fibre kept cutting out but seems to be quite okay now.

But I’m quite hopeful the power will come on through the night. Apparently they are switching on area by area and i hear that Onrus has been restored. I’m central Hermanus so hopefully it will come about soon, but I’m one of the lucky ones with batteries and inverters to at least keep the lights on while others are struggling.
 
Solid rain for the last few hours... going to take a drive later, I live next to the vlei in milnerton and I have never seen it this full in over 10 years.
 
35mm+ in our gauge in Kenilworth this morning, puddles are back on our lawn. I don't keep cumulative totals, but the first two weeks of June have probably been close to 300mm here...

Inflow into the dams has slowed somewhat (and doesn't reflect this morning's downpour), but Theewaterskloof is at 89.5% this morning (Sat 17th).

A bit drier for the rest of the weekend, then rain early on Mon 19th, and possibly on Wed 21st.

The first 'sunny' day in the forecast is Thurs 22nd, which might reach 20C. Mark your calendars...

A 64-year-old man was found dead in his home in Vredendal on the West Coast on Saturday, bringing the death toll in extreme weather in the Western Cape in the past week to two.

According to Colin Deiner, head of Western Cape disaster management, the victim chose to remain in his home.

“We evacuated about 20 people from the area, but this resident chose to stay in his home. He was found dead this morning. Unfortunately, we can't release the names of the two deceased people yet,” Deiner said on Saturday.

Another Western Cape resident drowned earlier in the week.

“Three people tried to cross the Buffeljags River and one of them was swept away by the water. This person did not survive.”

The latest DWS chart for Theewaterskloof (5am on Sun 18th) shows a rise from 89% yesterday to 93% this morning, and still climbing. This is an absolutely huge increase of 18% since Mon 12th, and seems likely that the dam will overflow in the next week or two.
