Rain and storm for Cpt

The SAWS reports widespread heavy rain in parts of the SW-Cape (particularly near the mountains) during the 24 hours to 8am on Mon 8th: https://www.weathersa.co.za/images/data/climate/nr_daily_rai.pdf
Highest include Ceres 124mm, Grabouw 84mm, Elim 70mm, Tulbagh 70mm, Jonkershoek 68mm, Villiersdorp 57mm, Paarl 51mm, etc. Also of note were Calvinia (NC) 30mm and Springbok (NC) 24mm.

Our gauge in Kenilworth recorded about 80mm. SAEON Dwarsberg recorded 124mm (see above).

It's big, but we were expecting a bit more. The waves were barely washing onto the Kom lawn in Kommetjie. With the Westerlies peaking around high tide on the day after spring, I expected something like the August 2008 storm surge. Kids were body-boarding on the lawn that day. Still pretty big from where I'm sitting.

It is best to wait a few days after the end of a rainy spell, with runoff (and snow-melt) still happening. The forecast for this week shows another 200mm+ for the mountains of the SW-Cape. The Berg River dam rose a further 1% to 96% at midday (Mon 8th). Once it reaches 100%, the cumulative catchment figures plateau somewhat, although excess water can be pumped to Theewaterskloof (at a rate of only 0.1% per day). I predict the levels to reach around 80% before the end of July.

this weather is Bonkers, changes from hour to hour, cant it make up its mind, now sunny all of a sudden, but still cold,
giving me JHB vibes, then then as soon as I finish complaining, dark and gloomy again.

how do you cape town people cope with this madness?
 
Jeepers, that was not for the faint-hearted. Without any 4x4/snow experience (and running on an hour of sleep), we made it as far up as one could get without getting stuck – the Matroosberg Reserve entrance, where everyone was turning around. The Q7 performed brilliantly and was cutting through 40cm+ of snow like a hot knife through butter, running circles around some of the Fortunas, Hiluxes and Rangers – several of which were stuck, but probably due to driver error... Some parts were extremely slippery and the Q7 nearly went 180’ once or twice. Great fun and the most adrenaline I’ve processed for years. I’ll probably be in the dog box tonight for what I put the wife through.

Forecast was showing about 20cm of snow at about 1200m.
Lots of people stuck and all passes up from ceres were closed this morning at 630/7am, due to dangerous road conditions and amount of ppl stuck in snow.

I’ve never seen snow like this in my life. Most places had 40 - 50cm easily, from low levels and up. We were extremely fortunate because the report of the Bo-Swaarmoed closure came in about 15 minutes before we arrived, but Traffic weren’t there yet. I reckon about 150 cars in total made it in.

There were a few plonkers causing huge blockages which really peeved off the 4x4ers and others capable of passing for at least 1.5 hours. Other than FWD numpties, a taxi and trailer that jackknifed, and a Haval which nearly had an accident on the way there whose occupants were doing a fashion shoot and flying a drone, completely oblivious to the traffic jam they were causing. Typical…

Yeah, I was hoping for a dry spell for a couple hours from 4 to squeeze in a run.
 
My solar output is like a yo-yo today, you look outside one minute and it's bright sunshine and then the next it's a sudden downpour.

You do know that it's called The Cape of Storms for a reason? If it was The Cape of Predictable Weather I would understand your confusion.
