wouldnt want to to be that stuck car, easy to drive into a ditch, when just pulling over onto side of the road.
Sjoe lekker photos, snow looks super thick in places, 30-40cm?
middle manetjie super high for low clearance cars., a set of snow chains would sort one out - though only use it once every 5yrs if ever..

Is it my imagination or do the beehives generate enough heat to keep the snow at bay, even on the ground below them?

I guesstimated 40cm. According to the Matroosberg Reserve owner, 50cm and the most overnight snow since 2018. People were getting creative with spades and car mats. A large rescue vehicle also arrived on the scene. That older Fortuner with hazards was one of many 4x4s that got stuck. The road higher up was very icy and slippery. Not sure why they could not gain traction as the Q7 with Goodyear Eagle F1’s had no problem.

Was hilarious watching them driving away carefully with their stash/trophy proudly on display. Thousands of people must have been turned away due to the road closure. Agonising seeing such a stash after not being allowed up!

They do regulate the temperature inside to 38° even if the outside is negative. Some of that heat will escape at the entrance but I'm not sure how much it heats up the area directly below the hive.

I do know that the snow eventually becomes an insulating layer when there is enough of it helping them keep more of the heat inside the hive. Beehives in places like Canada are covered in snow for 3 months during their winter with the temperature inside the middle of the hive kept at a constant 38°.

Hint: There is no landmass between Cape Town and the Antarctic. During a severe weather event the winds from the SW bring cold moist air for an extended duration. Refer to the synoptic chart:

Freezing in Fish Hoek. Been raining most of the night and all morning thus far. Strong winds. This is how I remember winter as a kid.
