Rain and storm for Cpt

The system that passed over the SW-Cape was the remnant of a decaying frontal low. Rainfall was limited in most areas, but significantly enhanced near the mountains. A persistent band of moisture produced rain for almost 24 hours over certain areas. The SAEON Dwarsberg mountain catchment station recorded 84mm up to midnight on Tues 1st. Some of this water will run into the Berg and Breede River basins (including Theewaterskloof Dam). Note: While thus figure may seem impressive, the annual average for Dwarsberg is 3000mm (the wettest place in SA).
 
After this weekend coming prospects are very bleak until next week Friday. Systems do develop in the mid Atlantic/south Atlantic but seem to dissipate before they reach our west coast.

The Eastern Cape coast will receive some good rains tomorrow (Fri 4th into Sat 5th), as a cutoff low forms and moves swiftly offshore.

Thanks for the info. Is there a site where one can get hold of the rain data collected at SAEON weather stations live? The Vaal dam catchment area is quite well covered by DWA with a map but the maps for the rest of the country are not that easy to read unless one knows what the codes mean and the Dwarsberg weather station does not seem to feature on the DWA site? Unless of course I simply missed it.

Quite interesting to watch the formations of weather fronts in the mid/south Atlantic and track the movement thereafter. The storm form, then travel eastwards, but then veer sharply southwards before they reach the west coast, merge with the cold fronts coming up from the south and then sweep rapidly around the coast. Checking on the same formation 20 or more so years ago one can't help noticing that the same happened but that the fronts seemed to have got much closer to land before moving slowly down the west coast towards Cape Point.
 
As an aside about rain making.

There was a 3 part documentary on "Mapungubwe" on SABC. In that documentary one of the commentators was talking about rain making ceremonies.
Apparently those old rain makers knew a thing or two. They never did the ceremonies until late winter in the dry season, and the ceremony always took place after lots veldt burning which pumped lots of smoke and soot into the atmosphere .... The commentator then made the observation that this is why it rains a lot over jo'burg --- because of all the pollution in the atmosphere over the city. Could not help wondering how much the fires on the Southern Cape Coast has to do with the increased rainfall of late ... :erm:
 
Really poor prospects for the week ahead. A tiny glimmer next Friday, followed another small one Tuesday the 15th.

Well I took the bike to work today, so that will boost the chance of rain by at least 30%

We travelled down to CT on Tuesday night and a arrived yesterday at about midday. Today has been overcast but as predicted no rain just velly velly cold.

Passing through Hanover last night the temperature was down to -2 deg C.
There was still some snow on Matroosberg to be seen.
 
Plenty rain overnight in Brackenfell at my moms place. Good rains are supposed to happen in the mountains as well.
