Every Winter, once the first snows have fallen over the cold South African mountains Berg Winds hammer the Western Coastline of Namibia, often bringing temperatures in the 30's, the day is like a scene from an End Of Days movie........ but once the wind settles in the late afternoon, the weather becomes perfect for a braai or two....

Fish River canyon is lovely this time of the year, almost like Cape Town during summer. Also much more sheltered from those eastern winds given the geography.

That's because it's on the other side of the desert,

Ai-Ais is currently closed as it has been turned into a quarantine center for returning Namibians, My partner stayed at Hobas (Fish River Canyon Viewpoint) this past weekend, dead quiet, reckons the place is sterile, (it would be seeing this is where that Italian tourist with Covid stayed) and then places like the Road House and Naute Dam with the Gin place were deserted....

Your economy will probably take quite a knock then considering that it is now your tourist season?

The warm offshore berg-winds will reach Cape Town early tomorrow (Thurs 18th).

Read recently that only a fifth of all deserts are those undulating sandy deserts.

Polar deserts are the biggest by percentage landmass.

Not so much my town but all the other spots around the Karas region, in fact the entire Namibia is pretty whacked and very tourist dependent...

Persistent moderately heavy rain Kenilworth, 26mm in the gauge at 1pm (Sun 21st). Definitely more than predicted!

Much less rain elsewhere away from the mountains (orographic effect). Not much over the catchment areas.

Same here, fairly steady, soaking rain in early hours until midday ish .. since then interspersed with cloud and sunshine.

Yesterday evening saw an on and off sprinkling as well in S Subs as predicted on MeteoBlue.

Fish Hoek, away from the mountains, as usual... almost zilch.

Heavy rain on Thurs 25th, with cold and possible snow. Rather windy on Sat 27th with more rain, but no snow. The forecasts are still fluctuating, but definitely unsettled weather coming, after a few sunny days.

Looking at the satellite pictures etc they don't look as strong as the previous ones have been?

I thought it was going to rain this morning, but seems likely around sunset this evening. Light snow is possible on the highest peaks tomorrow.

Nowhere near as strong as previous fronts, but the wind gradient could be severe on Sat 27th, particularly deep offshore.
