Seeing as it seems to be impossible to get hold of a Raspberry Pi board, are there any equivalents I can purchase instead? My requirements are:

  • Cheap
  • Run Linux (just as long as it has a browser I can use to display HTML5 content)
  • HDMI Output
  • Wi-fi or USB port so I can plug in a Wi-fi dongle

Thanks, ghoti, either it's not yet released or the shipping to SA costs more than the product :(

Any local suppliers for these kinds of devices?

My Raspberry Pi should be shipped sometime this week :D

Cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Thanks, Yotch, checked a few out, some don't ship to SA.

Are there any local distributors at all that stock this kind of thing?

my rasberry cant do html 5 yet , i see they still busy with coding it etc:(

I've registered twice for a Raspberry PI.
Ordered my one about two weeks ago.
I've now received my 2nd unique order code but obviously I have no need for it.

Please PM me if you want the unique activation code.

Regards

I have one MK802 left. The other people on Bid or buy are selling them at R2k+ I am selling the sample for R999, only used to shoot the video. It can run Ubuntu 12.04 which I am busy downloading. Will have more units next week.

Pity these things are so expensive, Raspberry Pi probably works out to around R 300 so most I would pay for something similar is R 500. Might as well wait till they finally have stock again one day.

Yes, unfortunately the vat and shipping charges alone works out almost the same as the cost of the pi.

These units are however more than twice as powerful so there will never be a direct comparison.

I'm basically looking for a small device I can plug into the back of a TV (via HDMI) and the device should then be running a browser (full screen) that should be displayed on the TV in HD. It will, e.g. have a website open with a scrolling slideshow so it would need wifi so it can access the internet. Does your device do this? Plus how would I power it?

There are two ways to power the device. First option via normal plug charger or via usb if the tv has a free port that supplies power.

As this device runs android 4 you can download many browsers. It does have flash capabilities so you connect the device to the hdmi port, hook up a wireless keyboard and mouse and you are good to go.

I might be wrong but i dont think the pi has an hdmi port. Does anyone know whether it even supports flash?

Edit. I see it does have an hdmi port. Not sire about flash though.
