This is my problem.
I don't want to hear about "my chances" or "depending on line", I want to know what the facts are.
What protocols do you shape?
How much do you shape it by?
When does throttling kick in?
Do you throttle all protocols or only the offending ones?
Is there a "rolling window" of some sort?
How long am I throttled?
What do I do to get to full speed again?
Damn, 1.2TB on 4MB, I doubt anyone gonna experience any throttling. Unless you plan on backing up the entire internet LOL
but seriously whats the catch?
@Keeper that is your opinion and thank you for that, feel sad that you dont even try before you buy but its OK not a problem.
and as for the test accounts i get each day if i need, and i am not a unknown member you just dont know me.
Thank you for the input
Only 4 test accounts...
...with a 1Gb cap...
...valid for 1 day only...
...from an unknown ISP...
...with a broken Website...
...that charges more than OpenWeb Gold...
...promoted with a measly 5% discount...
...from an unknown member...
...that has only used the service for 3 weeks...
...that has no clue about the AUP policy...
...that said he was disgusted at the service...
...because there was only 1 person answering calls...
...that got fired.
I think i'll pass thanks, OpenWeb have been nothing but good to me... You guys just seem a *tiny* bit dodgy imo.
The pricing seems whack - R275 for 1Mb uncapped and R300 for 1Mb Uncapped PLUS Telkom ADSL Rental?
That makes the line rental only 25 bucks.... hmm - very dodgy, somehow I think the Data part is subsidizing the Line rental, which tells me the account is going to be sub-par.
We shape Http downloads, NTTP and Peer to Peer since these are the "offending" ones. What protocols do you shape?
We shape to 3/4 during 07:00 and 19:00 weekdaysHow much do you shape it by?
Our system (via our upstream provider) monitors usage on a 10 calendar day rolling period. Should your account be identified as the highest usage account in your group, throttling will set in.When does throttling kick in?
As mentioned above, the "usual suspects" being Http, NNTP and Peer to Peer is throttled.Do you throttle all protocols or only the offending ones?
Yup, it's a 10 calendar day rolling window. Is there a "rolling window" of some sort?
How long am I throttled?Sadly, as long as you are identified as the highest user in your specific account group, you will be shaped / throtlled
As much as it pains me to say this, reduce your downloads. What do I do to get to full speed again?
While virtually everything I've said above seems like it is taken from a "Text book for ISP's in South Africa" it sadly is still the state of affairs of internet access in South Africa. I hear the frustrating muttering in the office indicating that we (even the bosses) hate shaping / throttling just as much as our users do and continuously fight to have this evil removed. Unfortunately, this is a battle that will continue for an undetermined amount of time. We intend to live our slogan "Internet as it's meant to be!" and keep fighting for true uncapped internet or at least affordable true uncapped and unshaped internet access. We are after all, consumers just as you are and would love the same services you want
That seems to be the case with other ISP's though. Did a check with Afrihost the other day and its almost the same.
For eg, a 50G bundle will cost you R 399, yet a 4Mb line with 50G will cost you R 450. So an extra 51 bucks for the line.
So there is some form of subsidization taking place.
From an ISPs point of view, isn't a 1TB user on a 4mbps line mean that you'd be running at a loss at that price?
