Agreed, last night for the first time in a long time to connection speeds were awful - pages half-loading or not loading at all : MWEB, Facebook, Mail & Guardian - local and international sites. I tempted fate obviously by complaining elsewhere that for the past week or so our ADSL at work, on WA, was useless and that iBurst was better, lol! Been having huge problems there with speed...

We detected and logged an issue with one of our upstreams. Sorry about that...didn't want to give you an ADSL experience.

My download speeds seem to be much less than a month ago and I am getting 50-100ms more than that I use to get on all online applications. Also latency and pings times even locally seems to be very erratic and not as stable as it use to be, some nights pings times can get horrible as above. This is my observations over the last few weeks, not too happy about it. Thankfully I am not getting any packet loss. Hoping the pings time and latency will improve.

Tonight my Ventrillo is lagging badly, ppl voices are breaking up, WoW ingame latency is very erratic.

this is total bullshot!!! its been 2 weeks and i keep on getting 5kbs downloading speeds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even at 7am in the morning, first i thought it was my router N+ not properly utilizing the G+ cards, but even the wired pc is tottaly lagged into its moer!!!!

Question Iburst: IS THERE EVER GONNA BE A DAY WHERE I DONT WAIT HALF A DAY FOR 60MB to finnish downloading???????
OR EVER GONNA BE A DAY WHERE YOUR STAFF ACTUALLY ANSWER THE PHONES?!?!?!?!?!

just little thoughts that cross through my fragile mind every day when seeing that page loading for 5 minutes straight..

+1 Yes, come on iburst. Seacom is fixed, World Cup is over, there should be no more excuses now.

SAIX SMTP - Spamming (Notification)

SAIX SMTP - Spamming

SPAM, or unsolicited bulk email, is the posting of large volumes of addresses advertising a service or product, which the recipient seldom wants. It is one of the most significant threats to the Internet and accounting for around 60% of all email traffic.

RBL (Real Time Black Hole List) providers such as SORBS, Spam Cop, Spamhaus, etc have created RBL’s to prevent mail abuse from known SPAM sources. Since most traffic blocking occurs during the SMTP connection phase, SAIX SMTP servers often get blacklisted. ISPs and companies subscribing to RBL’s will check the RBL via a DNS query for the connecting IP Address and if the IP matches one on the RBL list, the connection gets dropped before accepting any traffic from the Spammer or other SMTP source.

Current problem
The SAIX ASN 5713 has been black listed since 7 July 2010 for ‘spamming’ by UCE Protect-network (http://www.uceprotect.net) as a Level 3 threat. The UCE Protect RBL (Real-time Black hole List) lists IP’s in 3 different levels, namely:

• Level 1:
o Single IP’s that have an abusive reputation
• Level 2:
o Whole subnets of IP’s the have abusive reputations
• Level 3:
o The BGP ASN with all the IP’s in the ASN when there are excessive Level 2 entries

The Level 3 listing by UCE Protect causes sporadic problems with mail delivery for leased line users with their own SMTP relays and for the SAIX SMTP relays.

Tracing and de-listing is a problem with UCE Protect Level 3 listing, as the abuse/spamming is done directly from a user’s dynamic IP to the remote mail server. As such we do not have any control over the TCP/IP transaction on the SAIX SMTP relay servers.

Since the dynamic IP blocks, which are allocated to the ADSL users are in the same BPG ASN, leased line customers and the SAIX services do get affected when a Level 3 listing is reached. This has an impact on the overall service and we have no immediate way of working around this.

Solution
A short term solution will be implemented on 13 August 2010 whereby offenders will be prevented sending mail from their ADSL lines, by blocking SMTP port TCP/25 traffic.

Currently SAIX have a feature on the Radius AAA side to blacklist a username from using the SAIX SMTP relay servers by applying an ACL to the PPPoE interface of that specific user.

This list will be extended to block all SMTP TCP/25 traffic from an abuser’s PPPoE interface. This will limit the TCP/25 blocking to specific offenders.

The SAIX Abuse centre will email a list of all the ISPs offenders to the ISP on a daily basis. If an ISP does not receive such a list, they must contact abuse.saix.net. The first list will be emailed on 13 Aug 2010 when the solution is implemented.

The usual - I would not say that this is a big speed improvement. Why dont Iburst move away from MTN?
Cant play games with 500ms ping!!!
I am in Plumstead Cape Town about 400m from Iburst tower so signal between myself and tower is great. Thios started on Saturday and has not been sorted out

Iburst down

Does anyone have any idea what's up with iburst, network is down and even there homepage is down?

Back up and running now.

I had just gotten home and had problems connecting. Was getting super annoyed as I had just formatted last night and it was working perfectly and then I had problems dialing up.

Started working again. That's what matter?

There were degraded services on iBurst this afternoon. There was a break in the fibre cable from our fibre supplier. Apologies for the inconvenience. Our fibre supplier was meant to have reduandant paths available to us a month ago and we are still waiting.

Thanks for nothing iBurst

Really dont know why I even think buying boosters is worth it. I wanted to play bfbc2 so a bought 1gb. Allot that helped me, with unstable pings and tonight I'm getting dc'ed of iburst.

I want a refund >.<

Apologies for the inconvience. We are all frustrated with the upstream fibre provider. Trying to force them to improve the service levels.
