Ready, Steady, Cook...

will try again, thanks DJK (ag, it irritates me to type that last letter add on :p)

thanks for your trouble guys. can't wait to go and bake now

Awesome like a foursome! Time to start experimenting with fluid gels then. The one I've been wanting to try is a black soy fluid gel sauce (which just doesn't work with gelatin), served over a salad of sesame coated beef, melon, cucumber and chilli. Ava, where did you buy yours from?

Hah! I remembered!

She said she gets the agar agar from Maallies (sp?) or Akhalwayas (sp?) in Fordsburg. It's apparently quite pricey here (not sure where she's comparing it to) - about R120/kg.

I have an idea for this thread.

Ingredients the following:

Microwave
General cutlery(Knives, forks plates)
Toaster
Kettle
Fridge

This is the stuff we have at work.

What kind of quick and healthy meals can I make using only those kitchen utensils?

The ingredients can be anything as they can be bought.

The Akhalwayas in Sandton City also sells spices and a variety of ingredients, it may be there too.

Damn - that's far too vague - we talking about lunch, dinner, breakfast? And what would you prefer - it could be a sarmie, 2 minute noodles with fresh ingredients chucked in to spice it u (2 minute noodles are like chinese noodles). Basically, the only cooking devices you have is a toaster and kettle. The couscous thread might interest you - http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=157859

Cook couscous with a stock (from cube using the kettle) and add some fresh ingredients like lemon zest, chilli, coriander leaves, some spices (bottled probably but use sparingly), fresh chopped tomato, feta and drizzle with a dressing/lemon juice from the fridge. Serve with harissa paste and feta on toast and you've covered all the list except for the microwave (which is a good thing - maybe a microwaved cup of soup which you dip harissa toast in to? )

You could also buy some humus (or preferably make your own) and spread this on toast to be a little different. Serve this with some soup (on the side) instead of croutons - more of a winter thing though - but humus on toast is awesome on its own...

I have:

General salt/spices etc.
Leftover Chicken Carcass
Stock
Veggies

Creamed chicken and veg on rice. Pretty self explanatory - cook chicken with spices, mix in stock and simmer - season. Cook veg as you normally would and combine with the stock mixture just before serving. Add a little dairy like cream, sour cream, yoghurt whatever, thicken the sauce if necessary and serve with rice.

Sorry, I'm not in a very adventurous frame of mind right now and a little busy - could probably come up with something better, but that's the base concept at least. Cook it with some white wine, make a quick chicken coqauvin with red wine instead, make like a chicken ala king instead, chicken and mushroom stew etc...plenty options...

we're having friends over for supper. the menu so far is rolls and lentil soup.

any suggestions for a warm pudding to round it off with?

Er, not too sure - baking and desserts aren't my forte to be honest. You could do a tarte-tatin or a fruit crumble type thing. OK, let me put my thinking cap on.

What fresh fruit do you have firstly?

I have an idea for a fruit lasagne - sounds gross doesn't it? But instead of pasta you use fruit and instead of bechamel you use a flavoured cream - like apples thinly sliced with a caramel-cinnamon cream, topped with some of the coconut and popped in the oven. You could make a coconut-crumb for the top instead...
