Hi

I'm looking for a laptop in a price range of about R6000-R9000.

It must have an I3, I5 or I7 CPU, dual or quad-core but with 4 threads processing not slower than 2.2Ghz and can burst to a higher clock speed when busy.
4 or 8 GB Ram(if 4GB, it must have an extra memory slot to easily upgrade)
Built-In Intel GPU will be fine
HDMI port
At least 1 USB 3.0 port and 2 extra USB 2.0 ports
15.6" screen
500 GB HDD
Keyboard with right side numpad, black keyboard and color, no grey or white.
No need for Windows, I will mostly use Linux on it but 99% of devices come with Windows preinstalled so not a problem. Just don't want to pay extra for a brand new licence.

Anything good that someone can recommend?
I will use it for video playback and Android work, compiling apps/firmware etc. so a 4 thread CPU is important.

Also does anyone know how long a buyer protection dispute with Bidorbuy takes?
Have been waiting with no response from them.
The seller I bought from also stopped communicating now.
It was from a verified seller and Bidorbuy say they cover up to R5000 which is fine.
The seller sold a laptop with a broken screen while the advertisement made no mention of it and said it's a fully working device. A new screen would cost R3100, some places said they can do it for R1800.
By replacing the screen, it would be better to just get a full refund and just pay a little more for a brand new device.
Will Bidorbuy have to pay, do they get it from the seller or does the seller refund the whole purchase?
Does anyone know how it all works that have done it before?

You should check out the Lenovo g50 series, I have the i5 G5080 and enjoy it and plays WoW, League of Legends, Diablo 3 and other games alright.

Sadly it is out of stock

Yes that is a nice one.
Does it have a DVD drive?
I found the same one on a different site but for R8500 with free delivery.
Do you think it's still good value for money?
It's no use buying an expensive one over R10000 and then a year later you can't even resell it for half of it's value, that's the main reason I don't want to go higher and I don't have more cash.
I don't want to go too expensive but also not too cheap and later regret it.
Does the Intel GPU at least play some old games or is it very weak? I don't plan to play any modern games on it.

Yes it does have a DVD drive and usb 3 with 2 usb 2 and it plays all the games I have, you get fair/high settings to low depending how new the games are, but it seemed to play all my games smoothly.

R8500 isn't bad as the retail when I last checked was R9000.

Define old.

Check for a game and see if it runs by Googling. Age of Empires 3 or Counter Strike Source should run fine. Anything CPU bound would run all right, you should be able to play League of Legends with everything set to medium/low.

Have a look at these specials - especially the Lenovo IdeaPad G5080 Core i5 stk#80E5031DSA

Hi

The stk#80E5031DSA, why is it cheaper than the #80J2001XSA Thinkpad Edge, are there any big differences between the two?
How is the battery life of stk#80E5031DSA 4hours, 6hours?
Is it's color more of a grey black while the Thinkpad Edge is more of a black color?
Can you send me by PM, how mybroadband users can buy from you and then what delivery costs are for stk#80E5031DSA?
If an extra 4GB RAM is fitted to the stk#80E5031DSA how much extra will it be?

Whatever you do, add an SSD.

I heard an SSD increases speed considerably.
But more capacity at the moment is more important.
I will definitely add an SSD later on.

80J2001XSA

1) the stk# 80E5031DSA, has Windows 10 Home Edition and stk# 80J2001XSA has Windows 8.1 Professional ( which can be upgraded free via download to Windows 10 Professional)

2) The IdeaPad G5080 Series is aimed at the Home and Small Office and ThinkPad range is typically for the business environment

3) Battery life on both notebooks are around 4-5 hrs. I have ThinkPad and normally get around 6 hrs. on battery life

4) Let know which one you after and we can quote on the memory as each notebook uses different memory modules , the generics ones just don't work on all notebooks we rather quote on the correct ones but give or take you looking at around R 800 for extra 4GB
generic ones are normally around R 400.00

NB: All pricing quoted is exclusive of vat

to purchase from us is actually very simple , please see my signature at the bottom of the screen

I am running Visual Studio 2015, eclipse with android and various other development things on a 120GB SSD.
Sure you're not going to keep your 600GB of 'linux distros' on there, so get an external(or put the original HDD from the laptop in an external case).

Why choose 8 hours a day working on a slow machine just for extra storage space?

Alas you can lead a horse to the water... :p
