Recommendations for small/super-mini type car

Yes, the Mazda is still cheaper and review looks pretty good:

SNIP

I'm going to a few places today to do some initial comparisons and hopefully narrow down the list.

Ya take them for a drive, I was in the market for the previous gen of the two cars and the Fiesta just felt like the better car, not sure if the 2 has caught up yet. Nothing beats a Fiesta's drive/handling in that segment though

Hmm, went and looked around this morning.

Checked out the Clio Blaze which is a good deal but the glossy trim on the steering wheel really put me off (it's the same on all the Clio models), the rest of the car is really nice though.

I could only see the Mazda 2 from the outside as they didn't have any on the floor, only a customers one which was at the back. I'm really impressed with it though and I think that's currently my top choice.

The Fiesta was meh. Looked at the Kia Rio, which is nice but too expensive - basically the same story with the i20.

Think I'm going to go back next month when the Mazda dealer get their Mazda 2's in and then test drive it and the Clio 4 and then decide. Too many options are just confusing me :D

Mazda's new cars are gorgeous.I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Previous gen Mazda still had the Ford influence, this gen is all Mazda, with the Skyactive engine tech and all. You should try the Mazda now, you will trade that Fiesta for sure.

Your list of cars is as follows:

(Alphabetical order)

Audi A1 (Budget concerns)

/snip

My pick would probably be the Mazda 2, but the budget might be stretched. Otherwise the Fiesta would be my choice.

Highly doubt you'll be able to pick up a 2015 Audi A1 for under R200k.

As for a recommendation to the OP:

Avoid the Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10 (Not 'Grande') - They're cheaply made and will leave you with problems. Plus they are well within your budget, so something like the Opel Adam, or Hyundai i20 are good choices.

Opel Adam is a great contender in this segment. The mid level Jam model is the pick. The 1.0 turbo engine is a gem. The interior is streets ahead of anything else in this segment and it is really packed with features, the most useful if which are blind spot assist. I had one for a while and was thoroughly impressed. Make sure though it is is the OPC Line as this has bigger wheels, nice body kit, spoilers, and slightly lower suspension. Opc line really picks up the car. Only negative is 3 door and tiny boot. Good luck in your search.

I wouldn't say that the new (2012 upwards) Picantos are as bad as you make them out to be. Yes, the plastics are hard and it doesn't have the finish of the more premium cars on the list but it's nothing like the previous gen and it's much better than the Figo.

I do agree though that it's not the kind of car OP should get for his budget. There are better options in a higher segment (i20, Rio, etc.)

I wouldn't consider the Brio; dodgy looks aside; that all glass tailgate could spell trouble years from now.

The 2 is a properly good option.

Anyone that would even remotely consider a Brio over a Mazda 2 needs to book a doctors appointment asap, if you have already had the lobotomy then my apologies in advance. :D
