Certainly. Didn't mean to scare Lycan off. I just find that wine-tasting experience and knowledge is directly proportional to the resultant cost per bottle. But yes, there are certainly good wines out there for under R100, even under R50 still.

So go start one - I am all for that idea. A simple win-tasting thread would be brilliant. We do this once a month with about 15 mates - we all get together and do an amateur wine-tasting with el-cheapo wines. More about socialising and getting pissed together than the tannins and bouquet of noses...
 
I need to avoid this thread for 2 reasons:

1 - its making me thirsty
2 - its making me hum UB40

:o I think I have a long way to go before I'm at that stage. But I'll look into that guide, thank you, blunomore :) For now I'm really just taking a try-and-see approach to this. Perhaps in all eventuality I'll find myself looking into different red wines. So far I'm quite fond of the "sweet" variety :)

From what I hear (from winemakers), that guide is not all that reliable, although it will give you some sort of idea. Best way to judge wine, is to try something new, until you find something that suits your taste buds. Everybody's taste is different, while I might like dry red wine, you might be more inclined towards sweet desert wine.

So, shrugged and gave it a shot tonight. Either I'm highly susceptible to the crimson influence, or that theory is spot on. I'm... well... quite surprised I'm still awake actually. I had a glass along with my pizza tonight and it's done a marvellous job of "soothing" my evening. Heck, I feel as though I'm moments away from closing my eyes and drifting off into blissful sleep.

I think I might be on the verge of forming a brand new habit!

Myself, I prefer a night tot of whiskey but alas I usually have to study late at night and thus need all my braincells. :(
