Hey, so I am in the unfortunate situation of having a broken fridge and I am trying to claim it from my content insurance.

I phone outsurance and the friendly lady ask if they can call me back because they see I am phoning from my cellphone. Really nice of them.

I explain what happenned - it just stopped working - but they wanted details. They told me if they replaced the thing, the amount I had to pay in would be R1070, which is almost half of what it cost me initially.

Now, I have some questions. My fridge was white and I really didn't like it because I wanted a stainless steal kitchen, can I only buy the same model, or can I pay extra on the replacement value to get a nicer looking fridge?

And on the receipt it says my fathers name. Will this be a problem. He bought the stuff when I moved in and haven't received a salary by then. I payed him back afterwards.

it will depend, outsurance won't really pay you out unless you can beat the price (you will have to get a quote from the shop i.e. game etc) given by the company they choose to replace your fridge. and if you can't beat the price (trust me you will) you will be given what is considered to be of same quality, not always same value. you can however talk to the replacement company and see if they will allow you to "upgrade" and pay in.
see what outsurance says, who they refer you to and what price is quoted by that company. then look around first before accepting. i had this problem when replacing my goods that were stolen. the replacement company wanted to charge 12k for an item that didn't exceed 9k in value. so i took them on.
i don't know if it will be a problem because your dad's name is on the receipt. you can find out if you need your dad to write down an acknowledgement of payment from you for the fridge.

What? Its that even possible? I didn't even know you could claim for normal broken appliances...
Surely it needs to be something special? Like lightning, or a fire or something?

I also didn't know, but everyone told me I should phone the insurance company. I am now thinking of not claiming, and just buying a new one as I will forfeit my no-claim bonus which will probably be more than what I get from the insurance. Hmm, between a rock and a hard place.

If you are going to get a R2k fridge with R1k excess then don't claim, if it was a R10k fridge then thats another story.

exactly! unless it's a worthwhile claim don't do it. it gets noted on your profile that you claimed and they can up your monthly payment to compensate for what they had to pay. so you end up losing.
