Restoring Vista bootloader

This seems to be the solution:

On the original Microsoft DVD in the "boot" folder there is a program called "bootsect.exe".

run
bootsect.exe /nt60 c:
to restore the Vista bootloader.

run
bootsect.exe /nt52 c:
to restore the XP bootloader.

bootsect.exe /help shows all options .....

Otherwise you can try any of these which would probably have been easier in the first place...

i found
bootsect /fixmbr
bootsect /fixboot

all you need after messing things up with grub

boot up with vista cd, choose language option, choose repair option. There's an option there to check the machine if it's not booting properly. Select that one. Reboot.

I normaly just use the dvd repair option.

Thing is it’s a laptop and I had turfed the recovery partition so did not want to go the route of reinstalling via the restore DVDs as that process takes forever and wipes your data.

For the record grub did not mess up anything. The lappie is being sent in for repairs and I didn’t want the technicians blaming things on the fact Linux is installed. So backed up my Linux partitions and repartitioned the whole drive to Vista.

Not sure if this means you dont still have the DVD?

If you do:

Boot from DVD
Choose Command Prompt
type: Bootrec.exe/FixMbr

and you're done, did this a week ago without any hassles

oh so there is a recovery option when you create the restore disks? tbh there was laziness on my part as i would have had to look for the disks. but good to know for the future.
