Retrenchments on the increase?

May I ask what area you are in? A broad category is fine. (IT / Finance / Sales etc.)

Corporate/Finance

been out of the office for past few hours and bumped into an old mate of mine who works at Standard Bank and he told me that the business banking dividion is starting with retrenchment processes.

That was one of the two I mentioned in my OP. Still waiting for someone to mention rumours from the other one, and then I will say so.

:(:(:(

I know of people who are using the retrenchment excuse to get rid of staff they don't like to make way for nepotism.

Certainly not in large corporates.
Under correction:
You may not refill a position opened through retrenchment without first offering that position to the person originally retrenched.

Nah you see, big corporates are more crafty. My previous place, they went the psychological and physiological route.

First they started telling the staff about the "Chinese Threat"
Then they put up pictures on the walls of the company's products "copied in China"
Then they made the place like school with morning "roll-call" meetings and using one of the ANC government's little programs known as the Workplace Challenge to piss people off for good. Suddenly, after 20 years people had to clock in, and they put cameras all over to monitor the staff...

Let's just say that over 60% of the company has moved on in less than 12 months.... People who have been there for 20 years, got themselves another job spectacularly quickly... most of us waited for Dec bonus and then promptly sod off. I was in this category.

And all of this because the CEO got very greedy....

@Moederloos, you're a great guy but don't take this personally please:

You are, in this case wrong. I've worked for (or been fscked over by, whichever you prefer) many companies, big and small. This is what I learnt:

* Loyalty is for the dogs
* Majority companies think they are above the law and regard the CCMA with contempt and generally you are at their mercy
* The only way to get somewhere in the company is to either sleep with the boss or to asscreep.
* Hard work is never rewarded and if you fall into the trap of being a hard worker, you WILL be EXPLOITED and they take it personally when you leave
* Sick leave is viewed as an excuse not to come to work, and vacation leave is viewed as laziness

A close friend of ours was retrenched by a leading travel agency all because the boss got himself a new floozie and she demanded to work there. This kind of crap makes me want to start up a website that lists companies that are bad to work for.

Agreed; this pretty much describes most large European companies.
They will **** you over and milk every second of work out of you. Period.
South Africans, beware.

Yes, and some select South African corporates who subscribe to their mindsets. Some SMME's aswell.

That's why in the last few years I stopped working hard because it got me nowhere, all the asscreepers got the promotions etc... I put all my hard work into the kuk I do after hours because, with that I get out what I put in... However with this new job it's quite different because I am basically a shareholder so what I put in, I do eventually get out and then some...

Yep, here in Europe you get "rewarded" with even MORE work if they see that you work hard and don't complain about anything (and trust me, there is a lot to complain about here at most workplaces), and if you don't work hard, they try to weed you out. Almost a case of "you'll be damned if you do, damned if you don't".

Asscreeping or being very aggressive and forcing yourself to the top here, are the only kuk tactics that will get you anywhere meaningful.

Same here.
But u shouldn't try to keep up with the Jones' there, then it'll get better.

Keeping up with the Jones'?
That is a concept not even known to Europeans.
They know how to handle their budgets and debts (if any).

Frigging Hypocrites. Didn't you know something like 99.9% of all South African companies sell Chinese made goods? Edit: Make that 99% of the world.

Cool, glad to know that poverty has been eradicated in the EU.

In Europe, consumer wealth and low debt are not mutually exclusive and Europeans have enough brains to know how to achieve that.

Unfortunately the same cannot be said for many South Africans.

Wow! Every single one of them?
That is amazing!

Unfortunately Europeans have the advantage of generous government handouts aka the Dole.
Just this week I was reading of an unemployed Frenchwoman who wrote a financial advisor a question in a newspaper. She receives a hefty grant from the State for unemployment, child maintenence and included in that monthly grant from the French State is money to pay her bond. Now this woman, an English woman living in France just inherited 90,000 Pounds which was sitting in a UK savings account and she wanted to know how to avoid tax.
The Mind Boggles.
