Telkom Rip-off

According to the Citizen (Saturday 5 November 2005) it is cheaper
for South Africans to fly to Hong Kong to download 100GB than to
download it locally using ADSL. They provide the following figures:

Telkom
Line Speed 1Mbps
Download sise 100GB
Estimated download time 9.5 days
ISP (34* 3GB accounts @ R269) R9146
ADSL line rental R680
Line rental (residential voice) R92.28
Total R9918

Hong Kong
Line Speed 1Gbps
Download sise 100GB
Estimated download time 13 minutes
Flight (SAA) R7942
Internet Cafe (average cost @ HK$20) R17
Total R7959

One must conclude that Telkom is a bottleneck to South African

erm hello and welcome

LOL welcome to the world of telkom........

its true that it is costing a fortune but soon and i mean real soon that will change. :)

hopefully we will start to see response within the next year.

you call that soon? that should have been done yesterday, I'm also making plans
about moving overseas simply because of the prices, my business is 100% online

pathetic - people leaving the country because of prices 100 times higher than they should be, and those are people with skills, money, knowledge, there'll be thousands of other people that will never consider investing in SA for exactly the same reasons

well, that's not really important I guess, changing the names of the streets and villages - now that's entirely different matter

LOL! Yeah, it's really important! Also, it creates jobs... new stationary (by thousands of companies!), new maps, new advertisements, new street/highway signs... :p

Welcome Dustin, its sucks and the terrible thing about it is that its all true.
We are being robbed blind.

Cheaper in two ways

Not only is it cheaper to fly to Hong Kong.....it is also 8 days quicker :D

So who is going to Hong Kong soon? I'll pay u for a 100Gb data...

I dont know why we keep paying... (sick cycle of our telkom lives)

Telkom is implementing an easy do it yourself ADSL installation.. Cost dropping from R404 down to R290, if you got a new WIFI router....
So there are going to be whole lot more unhappy customers, they just dont know it yet.....

tsk, tsk!!!

When you hear things like this... You wonder what our president had in mind when he made is state to the nation address about high telecoms prices???

This is insanely hilaroius.

The end of the year is nigh.
Before you know it, it will be time again for another State of the Nation address in the new year.
Wonder what they will have to say, as nothing has changed since the last State of the Nation address?:o

I hope this change. Really don't want to leave here, but the thought is busy nagging me as well. I think IT companies are much better off elsewhere. If only the people who could would wake up and do something!!!!!!
