Roku 3 tips and discussions.

Unotelly have replied acknowledging the issue. They are looking into it. When I get some feedback, I'll post here.

Has anyone found a fix yet for the crap YouTube quality on roku? Definitely not a problem with my line as everything else streams in good quality

It's a known issue and there's a bug logged for it with Google. They don't seem like they're doing anything about it. Asked one of the guys that works for YouTube and he bumped the bug so it gets more visibility but other than that, we're at Googles mercy.

For now I would suggest casting from your phone or PC to a Chromecast, quality is amazing.

I want to subscribe to NTV in order to access sport channels which I can't get on my Roku 3. I don't think I can do it through the Roku and will not be able to always have a notebook close to the TV. What are my options?

1. Buy a Raspberry Pi with the box, keyboard etc and have that next to the TV permanently? Once Netflix and Hulu plays on this as well then I can relocate the Roku to the bedroom TV

2. Buy Chromecast and then play NTV on iPad and then onto TV (cheaper option)

3. ??

Advice appreciated

One work around that seems to be working for me is to change your roku display settings from 1080p to 720p, then for some reason YouTube streams at a much higher quality.

You can force it to behave itself a little bit better (and that means 720p, not 1080p):
Play a video.
While the video is playing press home on the remote.
Launch YouTube again, it should stop while loading and go back to the home screen.
Launch YouTube again. Now videos play in 720p.

I am in the market for a media player but wanted to be able to watch youtube etc. as well. Was gonna go for the WDTV and then mede8er (cannot do you tube and all), so looked at the roku, but what is the media player capability like, plays all the formats?

Depends on how you want to handle your media. Do you want to plug your HD straight into the Roku or do you have it somewhere on a PC?

If your media is on a PC just get the Plex app and you will be sorted.

If you want to plug your HD into the Roku you can do that as well, I am however not sure what formats you can't play.

Roku has limited playback capabilities from usb drive. Also, it can't down mix audio, only pass-thru to the connected device which is a pain if your tv can t play 5.1 or down mix to stereo.

I use mede8er for local media and Roku for streaming from internet. If you only want to have a single device to stream and play local media, then the Plex app for Roku and the Plex server on a PC is your best option.

I had an android box before the Roku and I can confidently say from a streaming from internet point of view, the Roku is a superior device than an android box.

Hulu has removed The Blacklist from its catalogue.
I've installed the NBC channel which allows you to stream the latest episodes for free

Just an update, here is how limited the Roku's media capabilities are when playing media from a local hard drive.

Supported
---------
Video — MKV (H.264), MP4 (H.264), MOV (H.264), WMV (VC-1, firmware 3.1 only)
Music — AAC, MP3, WMA, FLAC (firmware 5.3 and later), WAV (firmware 5.3 and later)
Only supported file types are shown in the Roku Media Player channel. The channel hides unsupported file types. Dolby Digital audio in MKV and MP4 movies is only supported via pass through. DTS in MKV movies is also only supported via pass through. You must connect your Roku player via HDMI to a TV or receiver capable of decoding Dolby Digital or DTS in order to hear videos with audio tracks in those formats.

Unsupported
-----------
Video format: DRM-protected content, common videos like 3GP, VOB, MTS, AVI, M4V, WMV, XviD, DV, MP4-XviD, DIVX, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), MP4-MC, OGV, ASF, MPEG-1 NTSC, MPEG-1 PAL, MPEG-1 SECAM, MPEG-2 NTSC, MPEG-2 PAL, MPEG-2 SECAM, DVD-Video NTSC, DVD-Video PAL, DVD-Video SECAM, FLV, F4V, SWF, 3GP, 3G2, etc.
Audio format: AC3, M4A, OGG, AIFF, AU, MKA, APE, M4B, M4R, etc.

The Roku site says there are "hundreds" of free channels to view when you buy a Roku.

Are they available in SA? Also is it easy to switch from UK to US on the device?

Thanks

It's easy - you just need to set up accounts for each - but time consuming because you need to reload all the apps each time.

Thanks Bwana, probably best to follow suit and get 2 devices.

I wondered what the point was.

If you know anyone in the UK and you can get them to buy you a NowTV box you'll probably save a bit of cash. You won't be able to load netflix on it but you will get all the other UK channels.

When using UnoTelly, don't forget to set Dynamo Roku option in UnoTelly to either US or UK when you are creating the accounts for the specific region..

Is that with or without Plex?

Ok, I'll remember to do that before creating the accounts, tks.
