Root/ROM HTC phones

So after surfing the web a bit, I found many articles and youtube videos on people loading ROMs onto their phone from the xda-developers site. I've also seen that there are users who have loaded the HTC Hero's ROM onto their HTC Magic. Since I'm not really clued up on all of this, would this be possible for us in SA or do we need a specific ROM? I ask because I am considering getting a HTC Magic.
So basically what I'm asking is if I get the HTC Magic, could I load the ROM for the HTC Hero on it?

What I'veread on the xda site and other places suggests the the Hero ROM for the magic isn't the best one to use, something like cyanogen is going to work better. It will essentially run the same as the Hero roms anyway, since it includes 1.6 and SenseUI, plus a couple of other tweaks. A couple of the people here have loaded ROMs on their HTCs, you dont need a special South African ROM, but you will need to find the SA network settings and put them in yourself. Just make sure you use the ROM for the right version of the Magic. I think we have the 32a here, but I always get confused which is which. Ours is the one with more RAM.

Thanks man. Do you have a link to the latest ROM for the HTC Magic? I also read the the phone needs to be rooted first. Are there any links that you can send me in this regard?

Dont actually have a magic, was looking at getting one a while ago. This link is probably the best place to start if you're looking to flash your rom. Pretty detailed instructions of what to do, plus links to the most popular ROMs on the xda site. Which ROM you choose obviously depends on what features you want, it seems they all have their own pros and cons.

You see, if you make a nandroid backup (that is, a FULL backup), you just restore it and - voila!

There is no way, that Leaf can pickup that you flashed your phone - if done right...

I know, but I was just hoping that someone here was running a stable ROM :)

PS: When you do a Nandroid backup, does it back it up to the phone or the SD Card because some of the instructions says to format the SD Card. If that's the case, then there will be no backup to backup to. Pity, then I'm gonna lose all my apps as well.
 
cyanogen has the best rom for magic.. hands down

It only works with 32B. I've read through those forums and most of them requires a flashing of the SPL/Radio, which I'm not willing to do. There are new Android 2.1 ROMs out as well.
