Router not syncing but Telkom Tech's Is

Ergo - the problem is not your modem but either your PC or the cable linking them.

yeah try forcing adsl2+ had the same issue at my place swapped it out for a new router and it worked like a charm also on a adsl2+ exchange

He also posted that more than one techie plugged in their notebooks with their own modems and it worked perfectly every time.... He also says that his router works at his buddy and at work. He insists that his router/modem is OK, so what else is the problem?

The techhies plugged their laptops with their USB modems - he clearly states that the USB modems belonging to the techies work fine.

What else is the problem is the question?
 
This sounds like a case of Occam's Razor. I'm sure if he uses ADSL2+ to sync it will work, it's the simplest solution!

The OP insists his router/modem is fine. All the techies told him it is not.

So what is your suggestion? I see you have not given any yet.

I dont know - hence I am not suggesting anything!

Well clearly there is another problem, but to simplistically state that the problem is the cable or the USB port is a bit off, while specifically claiming its the logical solution?
 
The OP suggests that there's nothing wrong with his line and nothing wrong with his router because the techies router syncs fine on his line and his router works fine at work but it's the combination of his home line and non-Telkom routers that don't work.

The only thing I can think of right now is to change the setting in the router page to ADSL.GMT or ADSL2+ because for all we know, the Telkom techies' routers might already be setup like this, hence they work fine.

I had this same modem and the exact same thing happened to me. So I took the modem and threw it against the wall, I was so pissed off. Only to realize that the modem probably wasnt the issue, so effectively detroyed my modem just because that little Telkom **** came with his little modem and said the same thing.....AARRAGGGUJJJKJHHHH
And that router was working prefectly and all of a sudden, one day it didnt sync anymore. Logged the issue, he came out, used his modem and worked. I am still so pissed!!!!
What was odd though is that I got an old second hand modem and it worked, so freek I dunno, hey, telkom anomaly! I HATE TELKOM!

Your answers eliminate my initial hunch, that being the Billion's Conexant chipset performs badly with certain makes of DSLAMs used by Telkom (esp at 4Mbps).

The fact that your work 834GT also didnt sync/work probably means its not chipset related. The Netgear uses Broadcom's 63xx chipset which is know to perform the best with marginal lines.

By elimiation it would seem its something with your home environment; maybe something has degraded on your line, or possibly something to do with (inconsistant/shorting) power?

Yeah it might have something to do with power - it seems to be the only remaining variable. Were the modem's used by the Telkom techies USB powered, or did they need a seperate power cable to be connected?
 
Just wanna say thank to all for the advice...It was sorted out today


The "Advanced Tech" came to my place and after some proper inspection and a couple of calls from my landline (bastards will make me pay for that too) he spoke 2 some guy @ telkom offices, after giving them my neighbors adsl line number he said that my dsl was connected to the wrong node...whatever that means.... but he did some changes on the back end and low and behold my router sync'd up and ppp light came on.....

this was a really *** experience lots of fighting with telkom and I almost had to buy one of their routers @ R1k .... lucky i persisted.

thanx again for everybody's help guys!

I know a little bout pcs and stuff, it's the only reason I managed to get them 2 sort this I hate to know what they would have done to a normal / average joe customer.....

In the end it comes down to persistence. A lot of the Telkom staff are competent, unfortunately (for us), they make it to higher positions after a while and we get stuck with the n00bs or the not-so-competent ones!:mad:

Anyway, glad to hear you came right!

I'm experiencing the exact same problem! 3 Telkom techs came out, each different person with thier own router and they can all sync. I received my second router from my ISP this morning and it still doesn't sync.
 
When i had my dsl connected up in CT a few years back the techie who installed it switched the cables around. After about a week of moaning at them eventually i had a bright oke come round, (on a sunday morning too) he looked at the line and was baffled, then trotted off to the switch.10 mins later he came back and it was syncing, all he did was swop two wires around.
 
What exactly was swopped around? connection nodes?

This is driving me insane, my ISP (not Telkom) is no help at all and Telkom techies keep telling me its all fine and dandy from their side.
