RouterOS NAT vs OpenWRT NAT

Hey guys.

My current setup at home is fibre. (MetroFibre, 250Mbps). They had provided me with a Nokia WiFi-6 AP (PPoE client), that has two LAN ports, one for the ONT and the other for "LAN".
I had disabled the Nokia AP's Wi-Fi, and run a wired connection from the Nokia thing to my Mikrotik Routerboard. From there, I have a NAT setup, to isolate my network, incase something happens with the Nokia device. Don't want no script-kiddie on my network.

From the Mikrotik's LAN network, I have two Fortinet AP's, flashed with the OpenWRT firmware I ported. (No support on OpenWRT git for them yet).

My speedtests on wired delivers me 230Mbps, (after the Mikrotik)
The same also happens on the WiFi AP's with my phone.

Previously, I had seen that RouterOS is terrible at NAT (from what I have seen) , taking more or less a chunk out of bandwidth, jiggling the bytes to and fro from the "WAN" to "LAN" network.
If I were to flash this RouterOS device with OpenWRT, would this be better, meaning, i can get closer to the full line speed?
At the moment, my ping to google servers varies from 6-7 ms, but I would like to make this a little bit faster, if I can...

Youtube is inconclusive, and there's a channel demonstrating that OpenWRT is better at some features such as SQM, etc, but not specifically NAT on OpenWRT vs RouterOS.
 
You need to make sure that clamping is correctly setup on both. The default config on the RouterOS does have that.
Best to have you PPPoE handover to your own device even if it means moving ISPs.
IMHO flashing your mikrotik to OpenWRT is a good idea. A better idea would be to use an x86 platform on OpenWRT as you main router.

Thanks. I'll have a look, but I currently do have a RB750GR3, with the MT76 CPU, and if I can remember correctly, OpenWrt has Hardware offloading for that CPU platform, without taxing the CPU too much. Would have to compare the differences between a x86 platform with 2x PCI-E linked phy's, vs dedicated hardware peripherals on the mt76 platform...
 
Why have the Nokia there at all?

Just PPPoE directly to the ONT?
 
I don't have a link on MFN myself but I gather that is difficult to do when you have them as the ISP?
Yes, that's what MFN offers when you take out a fibre internet plan with them, as many other ISPs do. (Nokia AP and ONT) The hardware is theirs, so when you cancel, they will come fetch the equipment. They manage most of these devices through TR-069, so really don't want to jump through the hoops of getting the details from them, and if the PPPoE details change, they can do it over TR-069,and don't have to send me a mail. This also gives me a fallback, that if my mikrotik fails, I can at least revert the system by switching out the network cables, and be up and running in no time.
