If you had to choose, which would you go for and why?

Toyota RunX 1.6RT vs VW Polo Classic 1.6 Comfortline

Both cars are pretty much identical in condition and specs.

2004 models with 130'000km on the odometer.
Both in very good condition.
Full service history on both.
Aircon, power steering, etc
Both white in colour.
Alloy wheels and new tyres on both.

Both at the same price.

Urgent purchase and will be finalised tomorrow. Just need to decide which one.

If it has a Toyota badge on it and doesn't look like this:

it's an appliance, not a car.

Hehe.

Won't trust the wife in that one.

It is a car for her to drive to work and back.
Will also be used to go away for weekends/holidays, as the bakkie is not as comfortable on the long road.

I might be slightly biased in this, as I worked for VW for a good number of years, but I've never been impressed with any Toyota I've been in. They're utterly soulless to drive and the finishes are generally cheap 'n nasty in my estimation. I'd exclude the Landcruisers from this, but then we're not talking bundu-bashing capability.

Not that a Polo will exactly set the pulses racing, but it's a step up from a Toyota in my estimation. The boot space of the Polo Classic is rather phenomenal given the size of the car and they're quite pleasant to drive. The Polo has been the best-selling passenger car in SA for a few years running; a car doesn't reach that level of popularity for no reason.

Personally I wouldn't even consider the Jap.

toyota more reliable in long run, mechanically will last longer

Toyota's built their reputation on reliability. However, I'm with enigma on this one - I'd go for the Polo.

I had a 1.4 RS RunX for 4 years. Never had a single problem with the car. Plus I sold it for R100k after 4 years. Was R144k new. RunX's have good resale in the private parket. Not dealers. Dealers were only offering me less than R80k but I got many offers for R100k from private buyers.

Don't know much about polo's but I don't think the resale value will match the RunX if you do decide to sell sometime.

Toyota, family member has a 4 year old RunX 1.6 with 180km on the clock, still runs like a dream never given a single problem. If anything I think it drives better nowadays :)

Not in much of a position to make a judgement then, are you? :p My sis just traded her '05 Classic 1.6 Trendline for R5k above book without any hassle. Even VWs slated for losing value at a terrible rate, a la the Passat, outperform the market average significantly. Polos, CITIs ( ) and Golfs hold value extremely well...

Absolutley loved my RunX RSI and had it 3.5 years with no issues.

I'd go Toyota

EDIT Not a VW fan as pretty much everyone in my family has given issues, regardless of how high up on the VW rung they were. Thankfully, they've got rid of each one

But it will accelerate into the nearest tree, wall or other obstacle without drivers intention.

:D

Having owned both cars, I can comfortably recommend the Polo. I have tried owning Toyotas but have traded each one in after starting to suffer from extreme boredom.

And...as Stokstert says...at least you actually have control over the accelerator pedal in a Polo. ;)

LOL. I have an 05 Runx with 146 000 (bought it at 66 000KM) and never had any issue - except the driver's electric window died on me.
If you want to drive the car for donkeys years to come, go for the Toyota. The only beef I have with Toyota is the use of plastic in the interior and will make some annoying rattling noise.

Forget about how comfortable they are.....
Consider the long term costs.
I've been in the car trade now for 10 years and can tell you that the Polo will eat a hole in your pocket.....

Care to elaborate?

Regarding the "boredom" and "soul" of the cars...
I am not looking for an exciting car. Only something reliable yet relatively comfortable. 90% of usage will be for the wife going to work and back each day.

Look at the parts prices. VW Parts are expensive. A Cambelt change on a Polo costs a lot more than on a Runx.
If you want a car that will last, buy the RunX. They are very good cars with very good resale value. I personally think that it was one of the better hatch's that they brought out. Highly sought after as well.
