SA bangs the piracy drum

It tries to legitimize a culture of entitlement. WTF? If you can't afford it, you can't have it. If the creator/supplier chain sets a price out of your bracket. Hard Luck! It is theirs!

No it doesn't. It points out that companies like BSA make up bull**** statistics and spread FUD.

Whats the relevance? The same FUD has been spread by authorities for decades about dagga.

The relevance is that this is the point of the article and not creating a culture of piracy like you claim.

Sign up with Bizspark and get it for free.

Bizpark is limited to 3 years for free. But it is a nice program for startups. Then again how many businesses know about it?

Is there no Opensource or alternative software Package you can consider beside's MS's Bloatware?

I'm not quite following you here. VS is Visual Studio and is the recognised platform for .NET development. Yes, I could use some form of text and a compiler but you then have to compare how much time wasted without the use of a decent IDE.

If you have some open source examples, I'd be interested in looking at them.

If you're using TFS you have bigger problems than expensive software... e.g. having been dropped on your head as a child.

Care to clarify that statement with a bit more meat? :D

Having a pirated copy is nice but not nice enough to convince them to hand over thousands of rands to buy a legitimate copy.

It is the same in the music industry. Just because a teenager has a couple of thousand songs with dubious origins on their MP3 player does not mean that they are in the position to buy all the music legitimately. So instead of paying thousands over to the music industry they will simply do without when put under pressure.

So why don't they?

Ludicrous, entitlement and legitimizing piracy. As I clearly stated a culture of entitlement.

No there isn't. VS is an excellent IDE. It lacks somewhat in JS Intellisense but is the best out there. In fact VS and SQL Server are both excellent products. Aptana, Eclipse etc are seriously crap in comparison to VS.

Tried Eclipse

Reminds me of Sunday's Carte Blanche where they said the people of Soweto believes electricity is a right and they should have it for free. And if they don't get for free, they take it.

I take offense to the statement that people that pirate software are more likely to suffer malware attacks.

My pirated antivirus/antispyware sortware does a great job! :D

/jokes

If only COD4 worked in Ubuntu.......

Never windows on any pc or laptop of mine again.

Apparently COD4 does run on Ubuntu. WINE, but still.

Visual Studio is actually the one thing, apart from MSDOS, that actually works....

DSP software from micro corrupt is just as bad as piracy. I will never buy a DSP version of windows just to install and activate it and then have to buy a new version once i upgrade my pc, which happens every year. Thanks to the IEEE i can have a copy of Win 7 once its released.

Very bad analogy. No-one in their right mind (except for obnoxious, narcissistic, egoistical twits) would mind that Soweto residents and other poor people use electricity if that usage did not generate costs. There is only a limited amount of electricity and if illegals in Soweto use it, there isn't any left over and power stations have to ramp up production and burn more coal etc. In terms of music and software - it costs nothing to copy - Sony BMG and Microsoft is not losing a cent if someone copies their work - but ESKOM is losing lots of money if people are using electricity because that electricity is consumed ie stolen while no materials are removed from MS and Sony BMG.

This is a major fundamental difference. If electricity cost nothing to 'copy' like it costs nothing to copy music, I wouldn't personally care if these people were leeching it.

As for culture of entitlement, that's part of human psyche. In 1600s people copied books and the UK parliament passed a law curtailing the length of time a creator could copyright his work for - after that it fell into public domain. At present these copyrights have been artificially prolonged to the benefit of the lobbying copyright holders and to the detriment of the society at large. For some reason people who publish copyrighted material think they are entitled to prolonged copyrights - that's also unfair - after all they leeched the knowledge for free from prior scientists and artists - nothing is 100% original these days.

Untrue. Next you'll say that Time Magazine and Stratfor.com (attempt to) legitimize terrorism by reporting on it and the reasons behind it.

I believe piracy actually helps big software companies in the long term. Many youngsters who pirate software they cannot afford eventually go into business using the software legitimately.
If adobe implemented foolproof anti-piracy today, what is the chance of GIMP eventually taking over? Same with office & openoffice.

Software overpriced in SA

Salary in the UK £ 6200 = R 77500 Office retail @ R 4500 = 5.8% of salary

Same salary in SA = R 18000 Office retail @ R 4500 = 25% of salary

no brainer for the piracy

True.

"The first dose is free," said Hal Varian, a professor of information management at UC Berkeley, facetiously comparing Microsoft's anti-piracy policy to street-corner marketing of illicit drugs. "Once you start using a product, you keep using it."

UC Berkeley professor agrees, so don't listen to shills. :)

Of course, Microsoft executives prefer that people buy, but theft can build market share more quickly, as company co-founder and Chairman Bill Gates acknowledged in an unguarded moment in 1998.

"Although about 3 million computers
get sold every year in China, people don't pay for the software. Someday they will, though," Gates told an audience at the University of Washington. "And as long as they're going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade."
