SA iPad pricing: How do we compare?

Looks good at first glance.

Be careful of accessories and spare parts. The quotes I had for one Apple spare part were more than 2x the price locally compared to what I eventually paid in the UK.

Um the suggested retail price. Sounds like a "could be" more than a would be price. Anyone been able to buy something at the price in the article?

there's a reason its so competitively priced, CORE is getting stock that most likely wont sell anywhere else in Europe and UK, the reason? The imment arrival of the IPAD2

New PC prices are expected to drop over time.
You would expect an IPad released in Q2 2010 to be cheaper in Q1 2011, just as other hardware prices drop.
Or is Apple immune?

Thing is if shops don't stock the items at this price customers will just go somewhere that does. We've received confirmation from Incredible Connection Hyde Park that they're selling the iPad's at the listed prices.

Apple is immune, their prices stay insane for a looooong time.

About the first time one can use the words "core" and "aggressive pricing" in one sentence.

An droid and humans would also wonder why.

Not true.

a) What SA sell is a drop in the ocean compared to the stock coming out the factories - SA's buying is not even going to materially affect sales or stock levels. We are insignificant
b) It is still selling well in the US and elsewhere

AND

c) There seems to have been a policy change at Core/Apple - The new Mini and Macbook Air came in at prices way closer to the UK prices

Well I guess c is a result of a.

lol, TAKE2 imports like that's a option. Majority of people bringing iPads into the Country will do via mules, Friends, Family bought directly from Apple with a apple care plan that HAS to be warranted by the iStores in this Country. Why would you buy it anywhere else unless you were desperate and had none of the above options ?

Minimum of R4399 for an oversized Ipod touch? Tablets will need to get a whole more competitive price-wise with other computing platforms before I'll even consider it. Nothing but a hipster toy at the moment.

Amazing how we go from huge 'incredibly aggressive pricing!!!1!' headlines to 'oh, about what they pay in Europe'. How can "about the same as Europe pays" be considered "aggressive" by any measure EXCEPT as compared against the ludicrous prices we've come to expect from Core? In other words, are our expectations so flipping low that when we pay what Europeans pay we call the pricing "aggressive"? Do you think that European headlines blathered on about "wow such aggressive pricing!!!11!!1" at those prices in Europe? I doubt it. Not to mention we're getting old stock just before the launch of a new product. Add to that we can't even legally buy things from the App Store - wtf? - while Europeans can. Also 'sourcing' from Apple Europe doesn't mean 'shipped from' Apple Europe, it means 'accounting is done in Europe'; also one should look at European duties, and the absence of duties in SA.

i now see why every tom dick and harry has an apple product in the US

Yup, they're MASSIVELY cheaper in the US - still a bit more expensive than 'equivalent PC hardware', but in a much more 'normal' range. And state sales taxes range from low to non-existent. If I lived in the US, I'd undoubtedly have much more Apple products. Here, no thanks, I won't be voluntarily ripped off.

I would argue that the prices are aggressive based on the alternatives available at retail in SA. Core's retailers are offering the device for much cheaper than the existing import services and the iPad is also somewhat cheaper than the Galaxy Tab now.
