SA lifts moratorium on fracking

Only water? Or do they add other ... stuff as well?

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation lists 750 chemicals which are added - one of which is Benzene.

Of course those in favour say it's perfectly safe - but I've yet to see anyone drink a glass.

Apart from the chemicals, yes, a lot of water is used.

Around 18 million litres per well.

In the Karoo.

Money Talks!

And by money I mean the money that the fuel consumers are paying to the energy giants.

If you use fuel, then it is YOUR money that they are using to push this through.

You don't want fracking to go ahead... stop consuming fuel.

750 chemicals, yeah. But it's still 99.5% water that's used. And large quantities of what is injected are also recovered.

According to pretty much everyone. They are terrorists.

As for your questions, like with every other mining endeavor there are procedures.

Rehabilitation almost never happens. And always nature and people come second to people like Shell.

Water is one of SA's scarcest and most previous resources and this has the potential to screw up a large portion of the Karoo's. I know this is huge business and its a lot of money but seriously, a line has to be drawn. Fraking can screw up ground water for generations.

I don't know if you guys know what I mean when I say that international conglomerates are holding the country to ransom.

You see, almost all the petroleum refineries in this country are run by international conglomerates. This means that we cannot cope without them and they know it.

Now, over the years the refining process and purity of fuels have increased world-wide - with Europe having legislated some of the cleanest fuels in the world. The thing with purer fuels however is that it doesn't react with your engine the same as it does with the more dirty variety. This means that your car engine needs to be design for a certain purity of fuel. The South African market have some of the most dirty fuels known to the industrialised world. This means that car engines need to be specifically designed for South Africa, which is why cars are so heinously expensive and why it's almost impossible for our car manufacturing industry to get anywhere (as it can only sell local or export).

Why am I telling you this? You see, the conglomerates refuse to enhance the purity of their fuels and overhaul their refineries. Why not just legislate it then? The conglomerates have threatened to withdraw from the country if such legislation should come to pass. What is the government to do? Not only are these conglomerates with-holding cleaner fuels from us, but they make us pay twice as much for motor-vehicles as we should. If that wasn't the only problem this actually causes more old road vehicles on the street, which are all basically death traps waiting to fall apart.

Where will they find the water?

Yes, where will they find the water?

Now what about the farms and other small communities who rely on borehole water? What will happen to these should pollution occur? Who'll be supporting them?

edit : Supposedly fracking goes ahead, and they draw water from boreholes, causing most of the other boreholes to run dry. Again, who will support those people whose boreholes have run dry? Put yourself into their shoes, and think it over for a few minutes before answering.

The old oomies will perform the Karoo rain dance...
Haven't worked that well the previous couple hundred years, but they have given me the assurance that once Shell moves in the rain will fall, maybe just not in the Karoo..

What makes fracking evil again?
I understand there is a risk of polluting ground water in the area, but what else?
