SA moves a step closer to digital TV

How exciting. What is the big deal about this anyway? And why does it take so long to implement?

It's been funny to hear all the callers on the radio complaining about having to go out and buy HD Television sets in order to receive Digital Television :D Mass confusion reigns among the public! ;)

I'm sure Makro, Game etc. won't be complaining at all.

To be honest. I seriously think some of the salesmen at these stores don't even know the difference.

Southern African Development Community communication ministers decided last week the entire region should have migrated to digital broadcasting by 2013.
What region? I thought this was a country. Or, do they mean only the Western Cape, leaving a nice gap to backtrack through as the roll-out deadline floats by ....

um... i've got a digital receiver in my pc and i pickup sabc1,2,3,sabc education, sabc news live, sabc entertainment, etv, etv entertainment and a couple of radio stations on it already. Not all HDTV's have digital tuners built in so you will still need to buy the external set top box to decode the digital signal. The quality of the DTV is so much better than analogue.

Grim - where can I get one of these digital receivers for my PC? And at what cost? Can you use an existing antenna? Or do you need to purchase a new one?

Just to clarify - are you saying that you are picking up all those channels on DTTV (digital terrestrial TV)?

I also had a "hybrid" tuner in my pc. You can get these at almost any pc store, and yes, you can use your existing TV antenna. :D

I got mine for around R300 at esquire.
You can get them as external or intrenal devices.
The software that comes with it gives you PVR functions as well.
