They should declare it same as they would if they were gifted access to some club or other. They don't own it but are given free access. There's no such thing as a free lunch in this world.

Yeah. The thing is a mess. If you read the og article it makes some nonsense comment about siyanda buying amplats. Amplats is valued at over 200bn.

Helen Zille has had a long career as a journalist, anti-apartheid campaigner and politician. She is a grandmother living in Cape Town, the city she ran as mayor from 2006 to 2009. But instead of enjoying her retirement in the Cape, as many inland South Africans like to do, the 74-year-old wants to move the other way. She plans to run for mayor of Johannesburg, the country’s commercial capital, next year.

Her decision says much about the decay of Africa’s richest city. Johannesburg, which will host the G20 summit in November, is a mess. Power and water supplies are sporadic; potholes can be the size of craters. Ms Zille, who was born in the city to parents who fled from Nazi Germany in the 1930s, says that fixing it is “the hardest job in South Africa”. Yet her willingness to run for the post also says a lot about her status as a politician willing to speak out and get things done in a country replete with waffle and apathy. If she were to win, it would send a signal that her Democratic Alliance (DA) might, incredibly, replace the once-mighty African National Congress (ANC) as South Africa’s largest party.

In South Africa, Members of Parliament (MPs) are required to declare their financial and other interests to promote transparency and prevent conflicts of interest. These declarations are governed by the Parliamentary Code of Ethical Conduct and Disclosure of Members’ Interests, and overseen by the Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests.


✅ MPs must declare the following types of benefits and interests:​


  1. Shareholdings and Financial Interests
    • Shares and financial interests in companies or other corporate entities (public or private)
    • Directorships or partnerships in businesses
    • Trusts where the MP is a trustee or beneficiary
  2. Property
    • Ownership of immovable property (land, buildings, etc.)
    • Any lease agreements where they are either the lessor or lessee
  3. Remunerated Employment and Outside Income
    • Any employment or income outside of Parliament
    • Consulting fees or professional services paid to the MP
    • Directorships that involve remuneration
  4. Gifts and Hospitality
    • Any gifts valued over R1,500
    • Travel, accommodation, or hospitality sponsored by a private or foreign entity (not Parliament or the government)
  5. Sponsorships and Donations
    • Donations (in cash or kind) made to support the MP's activities
    • Sponsorships for events, campaigns, or travel
  6. Benefits to Spouse/Dependent
    • Any benefit received by a spouse, permanent companion, or dependent child which could be seen as influencing the MP
  7. Consultancies or Retainers
    • Any retainer fees or consultancies with companies or organizations
  8. Pensions
    • Other pensions aside from their state MP pension


🛡️ Purpose of the Declarations​


  • Prevent conflicts of interest
  • Promote accountability and public trust
  • Enable the Ethics Committee to investigate possible breaches


📅 Frequency and Oversight​


  • MPs must submit declarations annually.
  • Failure to declare or false declarations can lead to sanctions, including fines, suspension, or even expulsion from Parliament.

I would love to see the teeth gnashing if she manages to take DA to the top spot in JHB (maybe even majority? :unsure: )...

But my question is, what next? Who will DA work with? Minority government is out of the question.

EFF won't work.
ASA and PA will just sabotage the coalition as much as they can, like they did before.
MK will be a cluster****, ANC brought JHB to its knees...

The best option would be if DA/Gogo breaks the landscape and wins 38%+ to gather ACDP, VF+ and maybe some ANC iceboys (read GOOD, RISE) to form a solid (theoretically at least) coalition?

Going by last year's PR stats, ANC is on 31%, DA on 25%.

Comparing LGE 2021 PR stats for JHB, ANC and DA, both decreased by 1 - 2% each in 2024. ASA got moered and lost more than half their share.

If you look at the sections that have to be completed ( and this is why I say you lie by ommision ) there are multiple areas he should be declaring on

Given his sallary , lack of directorships , trusts etc there is a very solid case for investigation of where the income came from to buy them. If they were "given" to him by anyone , even his son , then it would have had to be declaired and in that case donations tax paid.

Arguably even if he doesnt own the property he has use of it. Depending on how he would have to declare under either
5,6,7,11 or 12

So a new reality sets in with 30% tariffs as the useless ANC minister in charge, Parks Tau, has done bugger all to reduce it.

Actually quite a few countries or economic unions like the EU obtained large cuts to their tariffs because they actually negotiated properly. Doing nothing was clearly a sub optimal choice.
