I still don't agree. The SABC provides a crucial service. It's not like e.g. SAA, which is a nice-to-have SOE...

Shutting it down because of the ANC would be a stupid move.

The crucial service is questionable in this day and age of cellphones and such.

For our economic reality a public broadcaster is not a necessity and the mandate it is tasked with can be achieved in cheaper better ways with licensing requirements really.

It is because of our economic reality that it is so necessary.

The average person struggles to afford data because of gouging by the telecoms; most people can't afford DSTV or streaming like Netflix...

For example, what is the most-watched show in SA? Uzalo on SABC 1.

Primetime viewership statistics show that soapies, news and sports are why South Africans watch TV.

Even SABC 2 and 3, criminally neglected by the SABC, get more primetime views than DSTV does, despite DSTV having the better branding, etc.

Check the stats for SABC in general and eTV. Why are they so high? Because they are public and free to air.
