SA Post Office CEO Mark Barnes resigns

Meh, I don't think he stood a chance. Given his very defensive attitude during some of the interviews I heard, I can only say good riddance. His claim and fanfare about clearing the backlog at SARS didn't improve jacks**t. Foreign parcels still take 3 to 4 months to arrive, nothing improved at all.

And honestly now that Gearbest and Banggood and other sellers are starting to shift to Buffalo, I can get most of what I want in about 10 days for R30 to R50, delivered to my door. Banggood even offers the option starting at R50 to include customs duties so you don't have to wait for clearance.

That's probably still cheaper than the R28 tax ('clearance fee' se gat) you have to pay at the post office, plus the petrol to get there, plus the time it takes to stand in the queue and wait for the single person working to search high and low for your parcel and then try and work on an offline system, print a slip on Lotto paper (because they haven't received stationary in ages) and then tell you the credit card machine is also offline.

Sidenote: There are some really good people working at the post offices themselves. One went above and beyond when she couldn't find one of my packages and said she would contact me when she eventually found it. I was very suprised when she sent me a Whatsapp from her personal phone to say she found it and a number of others that were addressed to me which I assumed were lost.

The Post Office assured customers and the SA public that the departure of the outgoing CEO will not negatively impact the organisation’s operations.

100% agreed. You cannot negatively impact on something that is virtually non-existant.

Sounds as if he did himself a favour.

Let's see, financial year ending 2015, the post office loss was R1.5bn
2016 reduced to R1.1bn
2017- R978m
2018- R908m

So how exactly did he leave the Post Office in an even worse position than he found it?

The ******** comments here are astounding. Not one of these idiots has any idea of the success Mark achieved before SAPO, but suddenly they're all management experts.

Still making a loss each year. You can't run a business permanently in the red. Obviously it's worse off now after it made more losses.

Geez you don't even need accounting knowledge for this. It's basic math.

Being less of a failure isn't the same as being successful.

Mark Barnes deserves a MEDAL.
He took a job that no one wanted and he gave it his best shot.
Even after a few years of intense trying he decided to part ways,
I dont think he gave up but he knew when to cut his losses.

Just tell me something Rietrot, did you read the post I was responding to?

No. I just responded to your post because it was absolute nonsense. And no amount of previous context can fix that amount of stupid.

I dont think he understands basic bookkeeping either.
Lol or maybe I do. You were correct in your previous post that Barns probably deserves a medal for trying.

Ie. Losses ad up even if they become smaller each year.

Yes but when it’s a monumental F up and it cannot be shut down then you have to dig it out and at least there’s evidence of that trajectory especially with the labour chaos sapo has experienced.

Just when SAPO was starting to get somewhere
My theory is we want all our SOEs to be on one standard, an inefficient incompetent one that is.
Any department which wants to excel will be put down
And I think this is the general attitude of the country, everything is ok as long is its around the 30% mark
Our cricket and rugby teams were also not performing at the standard (which is Bafana) so now we're bringing them to par

Good riddance. Just as useless as his predecessors.

It doesn't matter who you are, if you enter a fight that you cannot win then you might as well be called Jesus and you'll come out "useless" on the other end.

They were actually starting to improve. The problem is that it's hard to notice when something goes from utterly **** to only slightly less ****.
