SA Post Office Strike

Courier companies are all smiling all the way to the bank.
 
VANDERBIJLPARK POST OFFICE VANDALISED

The Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, post office has been vandalised and a vehicle torched, the SA Post Office (Sapo) said on Wednesday.

"Yes there was an incident of vandalism there yesterday [Tuesday]. Windows were broken and a car was set alight by protesters," spokesman Lungile Lose said.

No injuries were reported.

Casual workers had been on strike for two weeks demanding permanent positions.

According to the City Press, Post office employees were claiming that management was dragging its heels in converting casual workers to permanent staff. This was part of Sapo's labour strategy approved last year to convert 7945 casual workers into permanent employees.

Sapo was using a phased approach, offering casual workers part-time positions as an alternative to being contracted to the company through labour brokers.

"The aim of the flexible labour strategy has always been to advance the part-time employees to more permanent positions with full benefits. However, a staggered approach had to be adopted given the difficult financial position the company is in," Sapo group chief operating officer Mlu Mathonsi was quoted as saying in the newspaper.

"Disputes with unions are around agreements made at the time that casual workers would be employed in entry level positions with limited benefits."

Advancement to full-time positions with full benefits would only be done if Sapo was in a financial position to do so, the newspaper reported.

Lose said a press statement would be issued shortly with an update on the strike.

why cant they just put up a message that says sorry we closed when you phone them :mad:

So the dilemma is, do I declare the package as missing for insurance purposes already or do I still wait and hope for the best.

.. that and the management signed deals with the people and then just ignoring said deals. And it is not like management didnt know about the state of the post office, then why sign those deals? We complain about the workers, but I think the top management guys should be taken to task for this mess.
 
Does anybody ever get arrested, charged and convicted when they torch a vehicle and vandalise property?
 
I ordered something from Durbs, but it has been so long, I have forgotten what I ordered.

I got snail mail today. It was all local, but that's an improvement.
On the other hand while some branches appear open, Big Bay, nobody is picking up the phone.

The tracking sites work on/off. They're probably overloaded. They work fine late at night.

Not sure if it's significant but now their tracking database is entirely empty, for both old and new items.

Parcel number EJ........... was not found in the database!

Suspiciously empty at the beginning of a new month, I'd guess some admin or programmer needs to move that data to this months table or something equally absurd.

You got your parcel? Mine arrived at customs same day and still says its stuck at customs. I'll go check my post office for in case but still. I just wish these guys would answer their phones.

My parcel back tracked back to when it was received. Had first showed that it was onroute on Monday, now just stuck at where it was received. :mad:

A bit zigged as it is testing equipment I need now, not in 3-8 weeks time, by then it is probably 'misplaced' and then need to jump through the insurance claim hoops.

BTW: How come each day I catch up on news on News24, and this is hardly even a blip.
