Everything from HK. Good thing it is only apparently illegal then :)

Guidance on Posting of Outbound Air Mail Items

Recently, there is an increasing number of air mail items detected to contain suspected dangerous articles, particularly lithium batteries. Hongkong Post (HKP) reiterated that the sending of air mail items (including Speedpost) that contain dangerous articles is prohibited. The air mail items containing dangerous articles would be rejected. Moreover, the senders will not be entitled to any postage refund and may be liable to prosecution.

What is a lithium battery?

Yeah it's illegal in HK. What that means that it's illegal here too.

That's why batteryupgrade ships all the Li Ion stuff via FedEx economy.

The government should just shut up and bailout SAA every year.

If SAA actually used the taxpayer money it's given to provide service, instead of embezzling it and spending it on BEE management candidates who leave after a year with a golden handshake, they would be able to offer lower ticket prices AND they wouldn't need a bailout.

But that would require that SAA was run by people who are not as retarded as you, which isn't going to happen as long as the ANC is in power. Because jobs for pals and plundering taxpayers, aka "our kulcha", is far preferable to the evil Western concepts of fiscal responsibility and accountability.

Can't say I am too concerned about the legality thereof, just concerned about when I am getting it.

Edit, just noticed they did not use HKP. They used Sweden Post

It's prohibited to send batteries by Swedish Post.

Technically SAPO could confiscate the package. Also you cannot claim insurance on it if that happens or if it's lost/stolen. And in theory the shipper could be prosecuted.

It's illegal because of IATA regulations. There is concern that these batteries can overheat and cause plane crashes. Lithium ion batteries have to shipped in a special way in packages marked in a special way. The package has to be shipped by courier and use such a label: http://www.customsinfo.com/Portals/129262/images/li-ion caution.gif

Is there any light at the end of this tunnel...?

I dunno. But I think my future EMS stuff (I will have something coming in November sometime) should arrive albeit in 10 days instead of 5. But heck it's better than nothing. Reg mail stuff, SAL and airmail will definitely take longer.

But it's nice to know that the management have given themselves raises of 26%.

I want to order something from Ebay but I'm not too sure if it's the best idea at the moment.....

I would gladly have the items I am waiting for sacraficed if it meant SAPO gets wiped from the face of Africa. I'll live without them.

I wonder if you saw them pouring petrol everywhere and wanting to set the place alight while people are still in the building what would the law say for someone with a firearm relating to "self defence"...?

Unless the perps had doused you with petrol and were holding a lit match, you'd probably not be allowed to discharge your weapon to defend your life, in SA.

The trick is to keep an illegal firearm which you use in self defence and then claim you manage to take it from one of the perps who threatened you with it. Game, Set, Match

So regardless of the lies SAPO post on their facebook pages and media reports, the strike is ongoing and not only by the temporary staff but also its own permanent members.

Just came back from JIMC and gates are locked and security there block entrance saying that they all on strike and no entrance to the public.

Ordered some stuff from HK using DHL, should have arrived this morning. Did get a mail from DX about the batteries not being able to be sent via air.

Lets hope. SAPO is just a hole where mail disappears to.

Same here on a Li-ion battery I ordered for my Canon camera :p The seller told me that they can't ship it directly so they sent it via Sweden post.

Mail sorting staff at Witspos and Tshwane Mail are back at work today and they have started to work off the build-up of mail items. The SA Post Office has finally been granted an interdict against listed striking workers which makes it illegal for them to approach any Post Office facility to within 500 metres. This makes it much harder to intimidate and threaten employees who go to work. The international mail centre at Johannesburg Airport is operating, but not at full capacity yet. We are working with the authorities to give employees there the peace of mind that it is safe to go to work.
