SA Post Office Strike

I sent an email to them this morning requesting a local tracking number for a package sent by Deutsche Post which was received in SA on 18/12/2016 according to the DP tracking number. The lady who responded gives me the same info that the DP website gives ie received on 18/12 but apparently it still needs to be scanned into the Post Office's system to get a local tracking number.

So it will lay in limbo until someone decides to scan it.

I have been emailing a couple of people at the Post Office since the 19/12 and they keep telling me the same thing that the package needs to be scanned into the local system before they can provide a local tracking number. It seems the hold up is with Customs locally but there is no way to get in contact with them myself.

PM me your tracking number let me see what I can do.

Hi Thank you.
Just got this.

Item was received and is currently at customs awaiting assessment, please note that there’s a backlog and this item will take longer than anticipated for clearance and the local tracking number IIxxxxxxZA. Please contact EMS on 011 961 6039/6040 for further assistance.

Regards,
Granny

I'm waiting for two letters mailed from Australia on 13 Dec 2016 and know that the holidays would effect the time, but anyone know how long mail normally takes from Aus to here?
Damn, still waiting for these letters - if I were a betting man, I put my money on the delay being with the SA Post Office and not the Aus.

I've e-mailed the post office 2 days ago and I'm still waiting for a reply indicating whether my USPS parcel has even reached our shores yet (sent on 9 Dec).

The_Mowgs - if I send you the tracking number would you be able to help out? :)

Yes

Can you assist me with a package as well? Deutsche Post says it was received in SA on 19/12/2016.

My recent packages have been in Customs for about 4 weeks. Plus another week to get to you.

So add 35 days to 19/12/2016, should give you an idea. But could take longer.

You guys must remember, and no I am not standing up for incompetence, I just want to explain what is happening at JIMC.

People had things posted or shipped to SA during November and early December. These package that arrive here are literally thrown in one huge pile. So if yours arrived here on the 25th of November (just an example) it will be close to the bottom still as everything else that arrives will be thrown on top.

Now theres many people that work there, or should I say, they are there. Now person X comes in on Monday, ****s around for 3 hours and only then does he or she decide to log 1 package that needs to either be checked by customs or forwarded to the Post Office (still in the same building)

This is what is happening there. Now your package goes to Customs where the exact same scenario happens, just not as useless as the first step seeing as they can collect money on certain items so will process it faster.

This is the reality, things also go missing seeing as the pile is so bick there that if something falls off and rolls under a cabinet it will NEVER be found.

Its almost the same here in Cape Town with the big pile but here they actually work to reduce it daily.

Also, they had skeleton staff over the festive season so just imagine how big the pile is now and how long it will take to clear it.

This is where your parcel is:

Thanks for the explanation @The_Mowgs.

Most countries encounter delays of 1 to 2 weeks around the festive season, but its most likely 2 to 3 months here.
Must be hard to tell the difference in productivity during a strike and when they're actual present.

2-3 months is usual out of season, in season... good luck!

Yeah, it gives me a better understanding of what is going on. Think my packages should route to Cape Town so hopefully it won't take very long...

I think the situation is ripe for automation. Have a skeleton crew deal with the odds packages that cant be handled.
