Wow, increasing tax by 1% is gona be WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY worse than R200 per anum.

Yet again, the 5 million taxpayers are going to support the 45 million zombie anc supporters. The best part is that most of those 5 million probably voted DA/Cope

Anc scores brownie points with the masses (no tv license) while alienating the taxpayers ever more!

Oh well, I repeat it again: Socialism here we go.

Wait for it, more and more taxes will be cropping up to replace fees that the poor cannot pay anyway.

scrap tv lic != tax increase ...

It was pretty clear from the start that the alternative to a scrapped TV license = the money coming from our taxes. You guys were just too stupid to see it.

all i can say is WTF, its a joke, the the 4 percent that voted for the tax is stupid

typical ANC - suggest something rediculous in order to get what you really want i.e. paid TV licences.

On the other hand, if a 1% tax is raised, there's no way the money's progress can be traced to its intended destination ...

So basically the "TV license" just got an increase of up to a few hundred percent (depending on individual income) per month? That's nice ... :(

So if you earn R240k pa, you will pay R2400 per year for crap SABC 1, 2, and 3. If the combined household income is R500k pa, that will be R5000 per year for SABC. I'd rather not have TV. Screw them.

exactly- we have to pay 10x the amount for a service we do not use

Is this a separate tax? Because that wouldn't make any sense at all. It makes sense to abolish TV licences and replace that income from Treasury because of the huge amount of wasteful admin and red tape it eliminates. The income should come from existing taxes as part of the existing budget. A separate tax would defeat the purpose.

It is a fact that 1% of current income tax revenue would provide more than double what the SABC can raise from TV licenses. And the cost of collection via SARS is far more efficient. What the DoC is proposing is that for every R1 you pay in income tax, 1c will go to into the broadcasting fund. The finance minister will have to offset that extra 1c in his budget.

At present taxpayers are constantly paying up to bail SABC out anyway. By eliminating the inefficient license collection process, taxpayers will pay less for SABC in the long run.

Of course, whether we should be paying for the SABC at all, is another argument entirely.

Guess TV licenses arent covering the holiday/living expenses for all the exec's families.

Recently I had the fortunate chance to work in a very important government organisation and after seeing what happens behind those doors, things like this just boils my blood.

They can kiss my ass... 1% increase in tax to fund the SABC is not acceptable.

I would be willing if they did something like this perhaps.

R200.00 tax (fixed) for all tax payers (on condition of the below)

CONDITIONS
1. I DISPLAY MY SALARY SLIP WITH THE SABC TAX REFELCTING AT A GAME STORE AND I GET MY NEW DIGI TERETRIAL THINGY MAGIGGY FREE

2. A MINIMUM OF 50 CHANNELS AVAILABLE VIA THE NEW DIGI SIGNAL FOR ME TO WATCH

3. TWO OF THESE CHANNELS MUST BE NAT GEO AND DISCOVERY AND ONE MUST BE A UP TO DATA MOVIE CHANNEL (DONT PARTICULARY MIND IF THEY HAVE ADVERTS)

:D

We already are paying tax for these incompetent monkeys to ruin SABC. 200 million rand in fact.

So if I'm already paying the tax, then why the hell should it be:

a) Be more
b) Me forced to pay a tv license too

No. The proposal is 1% of the tax you currently pay, not 1% of your income.

Some of you might be missing the point.

This 1% will disappear into the state budget. Just like the Green Tax coming for cars. It is not intended to solve Global Warming or the SABC's money problems. It is raising money for the government.
