SABNZBD, Sickbeard & Couchpotato Guide.

I suggest posting on the SAB forums, they would know more about particular error codes, no doubt they would be able to help.

EDIT: problem sorted, had to reinstall and set up from scratch, still don't know what happened. Looks like the config file might have been corrupted.

Pretty unimpressed with SABNzbd so far - it gives me about a 20% success rate on things downloaded - either the download shows as incomplete and irrepairable when done, or the contents of the file are malware. I think I've set things up pretty well:
- using non-free usenet provider (nextgennews) as well as 2 free backup providers
- using non-free usenet indexer (newztown) as well as 2 free backup indexers

Seems like a pretty bizarre technology, that only knows after a large download, whether the files can be reconstructed or not. Am I missing something, is there a way to get it more consistent, or do I just have to download stuff and know that the majority of download bandwidth will be wasted, because the end result is unusable...

20% is pretty damn low, I get closer to 98% success rate if I had to guesstimate. Are you trying to get really old stuff by any chance?

Also you will learn when to recognise an issue before you've downloaded it entirely, if you hover over the download it will tell you the amount of current missing blocks. Generally if you start seeing more than 5 missing blocks from the get-go then it's highly likely that download is a dud.

I've also never got malware or any other type of file except the one I was trying to download.

Thanks - actually it's brand new stuff (movies) I'm trying to download - sometimes the video file won't play, and there's a "codec exe" that you're supposed to run, which is clearly malware. Sometimes it's password protected and you have to do some survey online to get the password. Most often, it just fails with missing blocks etc (thanks for the tip on this one)

What usenet provider, and indexer do you use? Do you use CouchPotato, or manually search for NZBs - if manually, how do you spot best download options? So far, I look for high numbers of grabs, and some comments...

Just tell it to abort jobs that cannot be completed in switches. 20%? Are you only downloading HBO shows? Because those have a high failure rate.

A tip for Couchpotato is if you get the wrong file in the nzb, then check if it has the groups name (i.e. the group that ripped it) and add that group name to the ignored words in the CP settings so you don't get anything from that group again.

Well try download any HBO show that's a few weeks old, it will most likely fail. The big bang theory and some shows from The CW also suffer from fast DMCA takedowns.

Are missing blocks the same as missing articles?

I must be - how do I update? I see an option "Check for updates once a week" but is there a way to force an update check?
 
Upgrade to SABNzbd 0.7.17 seems to have improved things - options to check through the download before starting, and to stop on a predicted fail, make things more promising, first few downloads much better so far...
