SADV Installation Feedback/Progress for Estates/Complexes

Great to see you guys are making progress.

@sn0rbaard lel you might be getting fibre before us :P

Hmm, I don't know if we got the back link thing. Still in the dark, no idea if wayleaves are approved, no ETA yet.

Update: 21 January 2018

June 7th - Contacted pinball wizard from SADV after noticing potential DFA coverage, details from this thread.
June 7th- Received Proposal from SADV, to be signed by Trustees of Estate.
June 8th - Initiated discussion with Trustees of Estate, with motivation for fibre.
June 14th - Trustees in agreement, signed proposal. Sent off to SADV.
June 30th - SADV Conducted low-level survey of the estate.
August 14th - Meeting planned with Trustees for installation discussion. Feasibility study completed from SADV side.
August 28th - Kick off Meeting completed with third party installation company and Trustee at Tuscany Village. Method of installation discussed.
August 29th - AGM/House Owners Association meeting - Fibre installation agreed on to proceed
September 04th - All Home owners informed that fibre installation to formally commence on September 11th. ETA for build phase completion = 17 October.
October 12th - Construction starting today. Issues with home owners who were opposed to fibre installation delayed the process, this has been resolved. So delays are from the Estate's side this time around. Estimated time for completion = 1 month - so November 12th
November 7th - Main core line through estate almost done. Should commence with individual units installation this week. New revised date = Estate to go live before 22 December (feedback from third party installers)
January 21 2018 - All individual units done (who have requested for a point). Cabinet installed at main gate. Finished up with "fixes/restoration" during trenching.

Still waiting for new go live date - link to DFA node outstanding. SADV to communicate.

@Clayman How is the progress going on your end?

We're still waiting for municipality wayleaves here. So close....

Glad to see this thread is still alive.

Update from my side. I had to pretty much arrange everything between everyone involved. If I hadn't then everything would have moved much slower. So my advice is to do what I did and get elected as a trustee and ask permission from Body Corp to act on their behalf in all matters related to Fibre. Body Corp were glad that I got involved because it is less work for them and they're not particularly tech savvy. For instance, we needed to sign a doc urgently but Body Corp was on holiday... thankfully, I could sign on their behalf. It just makes things so much easier.

W.r.t. the drop fibres. At first SADV said they wanted to do drop fibres after trenching and installing the buddy boxes in the communal areas. Then after they did that they said, no, they would rather wait until the backbone is completed (we were still waiting for the way leave from municipality). However I said lets go ahead and get the drop fibres installed so long, as there is no real reason to wait. However, it was hard work waiting for me... I had to pretty much arrange with the whole complex to be available on a certain date for contractors to enter their units. It was complicated, because the conduits that we used were old intercom conduits that daisy chained between units. So the contractors needed access to all units at once to pull the drop fibres through... I arranged with tenants to either be there on the date, or to leave their keys with me. I also had to look up who some of the flat owners were, get their agent details, and get keys from their agents because some flats were unoccupied... What a mission. Additionally, many of the tenants were quite difficult and I had a hard time keeping everyone happy. It's kind of like, most people want fibre and they are excited when they hear about the plans for it, but they don't realize how much time and effort goes into pulling something off like this, and they should be thanking you for taking initiative to bring fibre to the complex... Instead they would moan about leaving their keys, have strange people in their homes etc... I must say props to SADV and the contractors who they're using in my region, they were extremely professional, friendly and trustworthy.

Anyways so in the end it was successful and the contractors installed all the drop fibres on 14 December. Today they finished splicing the drop fibres into the one buddy box and tomorrow they will splice the second buddy box and cabinet.

I was also contacted today by the SADV project manager and he wanted me to sign a DFA LLA letter for permission to go-ahead with the backlink order, so that it can be placed in the queue. I'm not sure but I think this means the way leave was approved and they will commence trenching outside the complex as soon as they have a team available. Holding thumbs.

You manage to come right? How's the progress going?

Things are extremely slow at the moment.
After the meeting I had in January nothing has yet to happen regarding actually moving forward and signing with SADV.

That being said, we do have a meeting scheduled next Thursday with all trustees to discuss the matter and to find the way forward with SADV, including possibly signing with them.

We had a trustee who had concerns about the exclusivity periods and what not, so we will discuss it then.

So we had the meeting and the trustees are happy to proceed.
Seeing as it's a HOA we will need majority vote to proceed with the planning phases.

I will be most likely elected as a "champion" to handle all affairs and communicating with the key stakeholders during the implementation process.

We will most likely have feedback from the AGM which is to happen within the next few weeks.

Great, just need to be patient with it. Bit by bit.

where do you live ?

If i may ask ?

Rustenburg, you can see the full progress in earlier posts. So I've heard they've reached an agreement, so just need to start. Haven't seen anyone working outside the estate yet, but assuming it's due to the Easter break. Hopefully should see some trenching outside the complex after the long weekend.

it seems like quite a schlep to get fibre in your area,
I do wonder how long it might have taken if you had just waited for the DFA to get installed eventually in your location.

I mean telkom been to us for a long time now, set up roadshows ect, but still no fibre in our MASSIVE complex.
next to bedford centre

It's not about DFA being in area, it's about connecting a complex/estate to an nearby DFA existing line for most of the posts here. This requires work and approvals to be done by the trustees, etc.

@ pinball wizard, are you still active on this forum. Tried to send you pm's but no response. Need some assistance with my complex as it signed up for SADV

@Sandman1 good luck, I've had great initial luck with contacting him, but sorta died out afterwards. Perhaps try their call centre if all else fails.

Updates from my side:

Wayleaves were sorted out, DFA busy sorting out the link :) Progress!

Yes he replied first then nothing afterwards. I even send him an email but no reply yet.

My complex just needs DFA to break in now as the wayleave is completed. Then switch on the network to make it live I think.

Exact same thing. Was great with communication initially to seal the deal (get our complex signed on), but nothing afterwards. Perhaps it's not his department as well, but meh.

Try their facebook as well, managed to get a few updates there funny enough.

Yeah to add a little non-update from my side, I also had good communications right in the start but now nothing from anyone at SADV. I had finally managed to get the trustees to all sign the SADV/DFA agreement, sent it in, had a few e-mails back and forth... and then nothing. I asked for feedback after a month and they informed me that they were trying to get our neighbouring complex to come on board as well and the lady would let me know in a week what was happening. That was a month ago, I have e-mailed asking for any sort of progress but nobody bothers replying. So basically over 2 months with literally nothing happening.

Funnily enough, while I have been trying to get some or other feedback, another fibre provider (I think[\i] it's Metro) has trenched and laid cable all down our street in the last 2 weeks and I'm just waiting for it to come up on my ISP's coverage map and if SADV still haven't bothered replying to me or doing anything I'll be going with someone else.

Rather disappointed to be honest, I liked the DFA/SADV offering and managed to convince the other trustees that it was the way to go (we had a proposal from another provider as well but I steered everyone towards the SADV offering) but once we signed the agreement to let them start with the groundwork it just stopped dead.

Metro won't show coverage unless it's a competed a complex or estate. Rather call them or their reseller to check if they will install in your area.

Im really confused now, afrihost shows connectivity in our complex, but SADV and vuma and openserve dont,

I thought all these fibre provideres can use anything else, so if your fibre is DFA, you can use vuma or TTconnect or anything you want

or does it not work that way at all?

So I looked at your exact building when I was with TT Connect, and it was turned down at high level feasibility. TT is however at Villa Abrosia and St George's village. SADV is in Kingsley and Spenser apartments at Bedford. I would assume the Afrihost map is looking at the street and saying yes, there is ftth there, it is however not in every complex along the street.

As to your question regarding DFA, DFA does not provide FTTH services to end users. If there is a DFA line in your street, there is no guarantee that it will be made available to anyone for any reason, it may be a customer line.

TT make use of DFA backhaul, but provide their own last mile connectivity.
Vumatel provide their own backhaul and last mile.
SADV are part of DFA, and generally have better access to DFA backhaul lines than another FTTH provider (we sometimes get to use the aforementioned customer lines that would remain unavailable to TT for example). In essence wherever there is a DFA line, is on net for us, which is not the case for the other FTTH providers.

The FTTH infrastructure provider is completely separate from the ISP.
