Salary increase

Most companies are not doing much in the way of increases. The only ones who seem to get decent increases are the lot out there who are willing to strike for it.

<punches a new hole in the belt> Zip, Zero, Nada. No word from the honchos with the ponchos as to what is going to happen salary wise this year.

so we were promised an average 5.5% increase, but most of my colleagues got less...some even less than 5%...eish

I should give myself an increase........ haven't for 2 years

Expecting an inflation based increase since we've been told not to expect much.

You better hope that that increase is at least 6% because by the looks of it CPI is going to head for the 6% mark very quickly judging from all the increases in fuel, electricity and municipal rates.
I wouldn't be surprised if the CPI passes the 4.5% mark within the next three months.

We had a company wide address, including a number of our international offices.

Where they told us in no uncertain terms that the norm would be 0% and in exceptional cases folks would receive 3%.

Heading into serious negative territory here now.

I'm not sure that a lot of employers have their heads screwed on right.
By giving minimal or no salary increases you drastically lower employee satisfaction and your staff turnover will probably hurt your business more than an extra 2 or 3% increase will.

Mixed bag at the company I work for. If your boss does a good job motivating it, the increases can be decent. Alternatively, the unions seem to be an option these days...

2011 increases are based on pay-grade. Lowest salaries get 9%, higher salaries 7.5%, highest (R30000+) get 5%. All-in-all not bad, I think.

I am in a little bit of different boat, I don't think I am getting paid what I should. Its such a hard thing to tackle when you don't really have much to compare it to per say.

Like if you are a programmer its easy, you know what the industry standard is and you can quickly judge if you are being had or not.

CPI is something that is used to make people feel good about their crappy increases.

I work for a Japanese company. And what with the Tsunami and ongoing Earthquakes they have experienced. We have already been warned our increase wont be that much. Last year I was lucky enough to get 25% increase. This year I'm just holding thumbs we get something :(

They don't care, they mostly believe that they can get replacements at an even lower cost.

The problem in SA is we have two CPI indexes, the one for the masses that always gets referenced and the one for us minorities who actually work to have a better living.

My SANLAM broker worked on a CPI of 7,8% instead of the government 3,8% and I would side with my SANLAM broker.

Well I got 3.8% this year last year it was 6.5%... Well im getting promoted from 1st May with an increase of about 60%. New tax bracket fails.

But if you are getting 4% or 6% more from fookall then its still fookall. Here is my advice for all IT people.... dont stick in one job for more than 2 years...

Rolling Stones in IT = $$$

I am not in IT, I am an electronic designer.

Things were good until last year, when sales became depressed. I naturally worked very hard last year to get some products out, which is done and dusted.
The increase last year was a joke. The 13th check was nothing to write home about either.

On the one hand, companies facing difficult market conditions cannot afford bonuses or increases of the good kind. On the other hand, employees are getting the shaft end of the stick because of it. What does one do?

Sounds about right... although many will get less than 7%
