Considering that some airlines with dodgy security and check points exist, it may only be a while till hundreds of lives are lost if a faulty note 7 brings down a commercial flight. This could be disastrous.

I'm surprised other facilities with flammable products have not yet banned these units. Could only be a matter of time that the note 7 is banned in major industry.

I was seriously considering upgrading my Note 4 to the 7 but after hearing all this I think I will probably wait for the Note 8.

Seriously concerned about the note 7

How does a off device in your pocket start burning

http://www.slashgear.com/a-new-galaxy-note-7-caught-fire-on-plane-this-morning-05459017/

The device being ON or OFF will make no difference - if there is a short inside the battery itself, or externally before the current gets to the PC board, it will make no difference if the unit is turned ON or OFF. When there is a short or a direct leakage of electrons from + to -, the result is heat. The amount of heat generated, whether it explodes, bursts into flames, smokes or just gets hot, will depend on the amount of resistance in the short between + and -

I had an armed robbery last month at my home - of the many items taken were two like new Samsung Note 3 phones. Now, insurance will be paying out, but what do I get to replace two Note 3's with ? The Note 7 would have been an ideal replacement, but with the battery problems, I don't know. I gave them a quote for two Note 5 phones as a replacement....but I am not keen on getting a phone that does not have an external SD card - what was Samsung thinking by leaving the SD card out of the Note 5 ?
If the Note 4 was still available, I would happily go for that, but I doubt any stock of the Note 4 is available.

What would you replace two Note 3's with if you had an insurance payout ? Note 5 or wait and get Note 7 ? or other device entirely - Huawei P9 plus ?

I have thought of the S7 Edge....maybe I should take a look at the difference in specs between the Note 5 and the S7 Edge. But the lack of an SD card in the Note 5 SERIOUSLY cripples the note 5. Without looking at the specs, I think the S7 Edge would be better than a Note 5 with no SD card.

He's a bit of an idiot parroting this bit after the latest fire (considering it's a verified safe one with both features that caught fire on the plane):

"The new Galaxy Note7 features a green battery icon that’s visible on the status bar, the always on display screen and the power off prompt screen — accessed by long-pressing the power key.

"Additionally, users can easily verify that they’re using the latest Galaxy Note7 by looking for a square symbol on the label of the phone’s packaging,” the statement went further to say.

If the SPen is not a major loss to you and you don't mind a slightly smaller display, then go for S7 Edge.

Otherwise the LG V20 is the device to go for, the only real Note7 competitor.

The PR nightmare just gets worse...

UK’s Royal Mail won’t ship the Galaxy Note 7 for you

The Galaxy Note 7 might be one of the best smartphones of the year but the high-profile recall threatens to derail the handset before it has fully launched. After making the no-fly list on several airlines – not surprising after the Note 7 caught fire on a plane – some couriers are also stopping you from shipping your handset, even if it’s back to Samsung themselves. In some cases, it’s not just the Galaxy Note 7 and instead, all Samsung phones.

If you want to ship a parcel in the UK, there’s several carriers you can use – most are international names such as DHL, FedEx, ParcelForce and DPD – but we also have Royal Mail, which is the equivalent of the United States Postal Service (USPS). Most customers will simply post to their local Post Office and ship something using Royal Mail but if you want to ship your Galaxy Note 7, you’ll be in trouble.

Thanks to a tip, we’ve been able to establish that there is a directive in place requiring the Post Office to ask about the contents of every package and to refuse any parcel containing a Galaxy Note 7.

However, some Post Offices are taking this a step further and refusing to accept packages containing any Samsung phone, although this is not an official decision; earlier today, we managed to confirm with six Post Offices that they couldn’t carry the Galaxy Note 7 and of these, two said they wouldn’t accept any Samsung Galaxy phone.

We’ve also heard that other couriers are refusing to carry the Galaxy Note 7 as well, although this isn’t confirmed as yet. We’ve reached out to the major couriers in the UK and the US, and will update as we hear more.

The Galaxy Note 7 is now beginning to taint the entire Galaxy phone range.

So, in some places you can't take it on a plane, and now getting to the stage can't even post it :p.

Not if you use the s-pen, then the note 1 would be better than the s7.
Agreed. But that would be the only advantage. The s7 is superior in most other aspects no?

Also can one use just a stylus on the s7 if required?

You can't even take your Note 7 onto ships now :p

On the same day that a "safe" Samsung Galaxy Note 7 exploded inside a Southwest airliner just as passengers started boarding the flight, a number of major cruise lines announced that they are banning passengers and crew members from carrying the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 purchased before September 15th. The cruise lines that have taken this action include Carnival, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Disney Cruise Line, Fathom, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, P&O Cruses, Royal Caribbean and Seabourn.

Carnival's website tells prospective seafaring passengers and crew members that if they own a recalled Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the phablet must be turned off and disconnected from the charger. Any apps that could turn on the phone involuntarily must be disabled.

Nope, you simply cannot replicate the Note range's stylus input on another phone. Remember all Notes have a WACOM digitizer, not some run-of-the-mill standard stuff, even the way the SPen gets power, it doesn't require recharging or a battery as it wirelessly pulls the power from the phone. It just won't be the same.

I use the SPen a lot, especially for Smart Select and Screen Write, as well as a Mouse if hands are oily or wet and I quickly want to get something done, not quite the same with a 3rd party stylus and no proper hardware or software integration.

The Verge saying what I said, kill the Note 7 and move on.

This summer, Samsung suffered the worst calamity that could befall the manufacturer of a mass market device with millions of shipments: a hardware defect serious enough to force the recall of all Galaxy Note 7 handsets. This summer. It was August when rumors of exploding Galaxy Notes started spreading and early September when Samsung reacted, but here we are a week into October and the drama still hasn’t subsided. What was originally a misfortune has turned into Samsung’s own self-harming farce.

TIME TO ADMIT DEFEAT

It’s time for Samsung to admit defeat with this permanently tainted device and move on. It should stop selling the ill-fated Note 7 and focus on making the rest of its lineup the best that it can be.

http://www.theverge.com/2016/10/7/13198682/samsung-galaxy-note-7-dumpster-fire

Lol

There’s certainly something Trumpian about the way Samsung has handled the Note 7 adversity. Originally, the company was decisive and issued a global recall, but then we found out it hadn’t gone through the formal processes in the US, which might have accelerated returns and spared some of Samsung’s blushes. Then there were weird software patches that limited battery recharging to 60 percent (only in Korea) and later to 80 percent. And finally, convinced it had rectified the flaw, Samsung started issuing replacement Note 7s, one of which this week caught fire on a Southwest plane.

Cue the late-night roasting from Colbert. "It’s like the old saying," says the comedian, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, oh my god, my crotch is on fire."

Lol everybody going crazy and losing their minds. Time to admit defeat. Lol what defeat...

https://9to5google.com/2016/10/07/samsung-q3-financials-revenue-profits/

Samsung are an incredible case study for a well run business, one area falls, there are others to pick up the pieces and keep it going and very well at that, a profit of $7billion despite such a huge PR disaster for one of their biggest product launches is something to envy for most businesses.

Even Apple would have a hard time if they got into this sort of disaster, iPhones are by a large margin their main source of profit, their bread&butter.

Of course both Samsung and Apple can take multiple major hits, they both have huge sums of money lying around globally, but it amazes me to watch Samsung year after year after year continue to so successfully grow multiple parts of their business, of some of the most expensive components that go into smartphones, tablets, wearables etc... Samsung dominates the supply a large amount of that from NAND chips, Displays, SoCs etc.... They help Qualcomm build the Snapdragon 820 and are rumored to be the main manufacturer of the upcoming Snapdragon 830, simply incredible.
