Comic Zeal is a pure comic book reader. It's meant to navigate through panes. For PDF's try Goodreader. But I read full novels/textbooks/spiritual literature, for which I use a variety of readers depending on the purpose - Stanza, Kindle, iBooks, CHMate, Isilo.

So when I got my Galaxy S2 and fired up some AVI's only to find that they wouldn't work on that chipset without a 3rd party app, was that also FTW?

I wonder what they changed? My Galaxy S and my Xperia Arc played any video fine. Up to 720p.

AVI is a old technology they actually choose to remove it in ICS as its not really being used anymore, all the android OS's before this could play it no problem. Its not cause they cant support it, its due to the fact that the choose to remove it.

AVI is a dying technology invented in 1992 by Microsoft, its fast becoming as useless as quicktime's .mov .... I know apple forces you to use the old technology but on the opensource side we prefer to move forward ....

Limitations

Since its introduction in the early 90s, new computer video techniques have been introduced which the original AVI specification did not anticipate:

AVI does not provide a standardized way to encode aspect ratio information, with the result that players cannot select the right one automatically (though it may be possible to do so manually).

There are several competing approaches to including a time code in AVI files, which affects usability of the format in film and television post-production, although it is widely used. For WAV audio files, Broadcast Wave extensions were designed to standardize post-production metadata, but an equivalent for AVI files has not emerged.

AVI is not intended to contain variable frame rate material. Workarounds for this limitation increase overhead dramatically.

AVI was not intended to contain video using any compression technique which requires access to future video frame data beyond the current frame. Approaches exist to support modern video compression techniques (such as MPEG-4) which rely on this function, although this is beyond the intent of the original specification and may cause problems with playback software which does not anticipate this use.

AVI cannot contain some specific types of variable bitrate (VBR) data reliably (such as MP3 audio at sample rates below 32 kHz).

Overhead for AVI files at the resolutions and frame rates normally used to encode standard definition feature films is about 5 MB per hour of video, the significance of which varies with the application.

More recent container formats (such as Matroska, Ogg and MP4) solve all these problems, although software is freely available to both create and correctly replay AVI files which use these more recent techniques.

well thats where the contract / data issue was coming in....
or I was also looking at the FNB option too .

my thinking was i do need data - so get the device on a contract, yes/no/maybe ?

havent quite decided. most prob, coz its my first tablet type gadget and im starting out - wud go for 16GB.

Not sure. MXPlayer is fine. I think it was to do with xvid/H.264 or something. In hardware decoding it crashed out a lot and the native player just couldn't handle a lot of my content. iPad is also a pain in this regard but in both cases I needed 3rd party apps to do just what I wanted.

AVPlayer is cr@p. Video is jerky even with lower resolutions. It's nice to be able to access your smb shares, but thats how far it goes for me.

Interesting, so now people want to play movies on a phone? Really is that what you buy a phone for? :rolleyes:
We are talking about tablets. Oh and did you ave to pay for it? No, if you did you clearly need to sell your S2 and get an Iphone

Yes that's what I bought my 4.3" SAMOLED+ Dual core state of the art-at-the-time Galaxy S2 for. Because I travel a LOT and I wanted something to watch movies and read on during my commute. I was fairly set against iPad at the time. Then I switched up and sold it, got the iPad instead.

We're talking experiences of Android being user friendly out of the box vs iPad. Yes I paid for the S2. Now I have an S1 and I'm quite happy with it.

Official ICS for Galaxy?? I personally dont like supporting a product that cant even release an update that is know to improve such product.

Long story short: iOS sucks, The biggest downside with iOS is, i cannot send a picture or an mp3 to another device because it only supports sending to apple devices. Even jailbroken the iCRAP and still cant do it with a third party app.

Do not want to turn this into one of those "iOS vs Android" threads.

Plex is the best most efficient way of playing full 1080p. XBMC plays 1080p (Nightly builds), but will downscale it to 720p on the current builds.

@Marine1 yes, I have the Note, and I watch movies at work when there is nothing to do. Sigh..........I bet you still have a 3310 eh? You should if all you want is a "phone", (mind you.....that could be used as a weapon, and the like I guess)
 
I am a big fan of Samsung {especially their galaxy phones} but at this point I think the ipad is just better value for money otherwise the surface looks very promising.

Damn I want one too!

They say it's not an iPad killer, but if it runs well and doesn't have any issues when its launched, I'm sure it will start quickly eating away at the iPad market share.
