Jailbreaking gives instant access to the entire Cydia repository, where there are a dizzying number of customisation tools, some free and some premium. And ALL of them are guaranteed to be compatible with my iPad. Whereas with Android it's a bit of a potluck. And don't get me started on the complete nightmare that is rooting an Android device, if you happen to not have a mainstream model. That way madness lies. My friend is vacillating between leaving his tablet on 2.2.1 or risking bricking the hardware and voiding the warranty just to get ICS. The tablet is easily fast enough but the chipset is so rare that there just aren't any mod tools for it.

All this customisation business is a bit overrated though IMO. I put ICS on my Galaxy S1 and Kindle Fire, added a few widgets... looked around for some more ideas...got bored and couldn't be bothered from that point on.


In any case isn't it a rather pathetic end to society that adding a customised lockscreen to your smartphone is considered anarchic? Sid Vicious would be spinning in his grave.

What tab does your friend have?

Bricking is a danger that doesn't discriminate; iDevices aren't immune. Most apps on Cydia are paid, and expensive. I didn't expect those prices. I suppose Android is to "blame" for that.

Got bored with ICS? Okay. I'm still having a blast, tinkering and discovering hidden or otherwise not obvious functions. Also put ICS on my 2 year old Desire recently, feels like a new phone I tell you.

And I think you seriously misunderstood my first post, if you think I meant customizing a phone is considered anarchic. A human has legs but simply because something has legs doesn't make it human.

Aura 7.0. He eventually got word that he really couldn't load it on. He's still mulling to try it. He's carping all the diems.

Bricking is always a risk ja. But it's greatly increased when you're dealing with 10,000 different chipsets working on one OS.

No ICS is great. Just bored with the whole customisation thing. Been there, done that.

You equated Apple users to drones and Android users to rebels. Maybe there was a star wars metaphor there then? I don't know what the hell you meant now do I?

Over at the XDA forums, each of those 10,000 chipsets has its own thread with its own rooting instructions. I don't see how that greatly increases the risk.

Customizing for me is about keeping my gadgets fresh, so if I were bored, well, I'd get to customizing :p

Again, you found negative connotations where there were none. Liking rules and uniformity doesn't equal being a drone. And in the real world you are more likely to succeed by being a rule-liker as opposed to being a rebel.

And each chipset has a list of users who managed to brick their devices trying one of the rooting methods. The problem is, it's a user community, not an official one - so it's purely user beware. Yes it's 'open' blah blah blah but if you actually try opening it for yourself and something goes wrong, the hardware manufacturers won't assume the liability and neither will Google. In the end it's no more open than iOS, practically speaking. And it can be far more difficult. When I got the Kindle Fire I had to wait months for a stable ICS build, and then another while before they got the GPU acceleration to work. Oh brave new world that has such people in it!

Customizing for me is about keeping my gadgets fresh, so if I were bored, well, I'd get to customizing :p

Not negative connotations, just stale generalisations - as I said. ANY statement in the nature of 'iPad users are like xxx... Android users are like xxx..' deserves to be flamed from a dizzy height.

Ek verstaan. So it's fair to say that Android users are cheapskates who won't support the hard work of developers, whilst iPad users are happy to pay for good quality software?

Most devs on XDA do it for the love. The support that we give them is through testing and using their software. It's not always about the money.

A pity, really, as most of my customizing involves flashing cooked roms.

iDevices have narce hardware though. If the iPad could run a stable CyanogenMod 9 build, I'd be in geek heaven.

Not 100% sure {always hard with these el cheapo chinese tabs} but I am fairly certain {80%} this is a way to update your friends tablet unfortunately the latest version I see is 2.3.5 through even this will give access to many many more apps {as gingerbread has become the API level to build for}, their is also a guide to root {if so inclined}, of course I accept no responsibility if this does brick his tablet but he should check the photos in the article they look very very similar to the aura 7 {and a couple of google searches suggest they are the same }.
