I'd stick it out and wait for feedback from fellow Vodacom Galaxy S users to find out how rooting went... I'd like to do it asap though, I HATE the Vodacom / Vodafone branding on startup and shutdown of the device!
Rooting won't help you to debrand, it will simply give you "superuser" permissions. To remove branding you need to flash a generic firmware.
Rooting is a simple proceedure, put a file on the SD card and apply... I guess you can change the start up screen then as well but you're still stuck with the vodacom firmware...
