Samsung Galaxy S3

Hey folks..

I'm a previous S2 user.. Loved being able to backup my current state, install a rom and then go back if I preferred my previous.

However in this wonderful land of the SGS3, I am a bit lost. People discussing bootloaders, bootchains, the SDS etc.

So last night when I got it, I immeadiately rooted with "CF-Root-SGS3-v6.4" and created a backup of my OS before any changes. Then I did the OTA update (4.1.1 I think), and things went a bit balls up. I feel as though the root had been neutered? CWM stopped working, recovery mode had only a fraction of the features etc.

So I kept stuffing around, tried CF-Auto-Root. Ended up having some progress with Philz_touch_4.0 CWM. But once I am in recovery, it asks me if I want to do some irreversible thing..

Can anyone shed some light on things for me?

You're not supposed to auto update with root. All other answers should be on xda. When in doubt revert to stock ROM.

Although it looks like you can just restore your original backup just after root and before OTA. Google it first.

Thanks Nadimm. I only found that out after I had updated. Once I had just updated I could not restore any backups, which was my original issue. Anyway I kept exploring and made it work, was just hoping for some knowledgeable people on here to be able to share some more insight on what happened and what the correct way to fix it whould have been, although I went about it differently.

I am on Android Rev HD. Very very nice so far. Either way, I still don't know about wtf bootloaders and bootchains are. At least I have a working CWM (if not permanent), rom and emmc fix for now.

You need to take it easy :wtf:

First time root, you should stay on stock, and experiment with root functionality. Then graduate to custom rom - initially stock based. Then CM (or any AOSP). Then you can go crazy with bootloaders, and kernels, etc. There are some good overall beginner guides on XDA that explain everything. Search for it (or incur the wrath of the xda forum).

If I want to get 4.1.2 can I just download the UK version from samfirmware.com? The one that says BTU?

ie. I9300XXELLA_I9300OXAELLA_BTU.zip

Does anyone know where I can get the official Samsung car dock for the S3? Would prefer buying it in person instead of over the net, as it's for a present this coming weekend

EDIT: Pretoria area or East Rand

Would also like to know. Saw one for the S2 at Dion Wired the other day.

Samsung store at Vodaworld should get you hooked up.

I registered on the xda developers website. Wanted to get free BetterBatteryStats. I downloaded it and its a zip file. Tried to install it via cwm recovery but i get the message that installation aborted. How should i install it? or where can i get apk file?
