I need a noobs guide on how to root to Lollipop while being able to save existing apps.

Battery drain on standard ICS is killing me.

Is anyone running a Lollipop ROM on an S3 smoothly? Both my brothers have S3's. I put the unofficial CM 12 ROM on one of them, but it's laggy and prone to crashing.

Easy - root your phone but don't change the firmware or factory reset. Then install an app like Titanium Backup Pro or MyBackup Pro and backup whatever you want backed up. You will need root functionality to do that, and you'll probably want to copy your backup files to a PC to keep a copy safe. Then flash your new firmware, install the app you used to backup your stuff and restore your apps.

Your list of apps are linked to your play store account.
I would not go from ICS to lollipop without wiping the device...

No one is saying he shouldn't. You can still restore your apps with a backup app.

My mom is having the worst luck with phones at the moment.

She got my stepdad's old S3. It was factory reset and now it just turns itself off. The battery has to be taken out and put back in for it to turn on. I have tried most of the things suggested online and even bought a new battery. However, the problem persists... Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem. Tried a few batteries until I eventually bought one, which claimed to be genuine Samsung, from Orange. That fixed it for me.

Stepdad bought 2 Samsung original batteries. Both didn't solve problems but it wasn't as bad as now.

Bought another original from takealot and problem persists.

Describe your problem a bit better?

My phone was resetting itself because the power / lock switch was stuck in the closed position. As it boots up it just hard resets. Is this what you mean?

Phone boots properly after removing battery and putting it back in.

After a couple of hours, it turns itself off. However the led light will still be on. So if she gets a facebook notification, it flashes blue. Phone will turn off, yet light stays on.

Left phone in same place just now, didn't move it or do anything and after an hour, it was dead. Had to remove battery and boot it again. This is with a new genuine Samsung battery.

Ive had my galaxy since 2012. It still looks brand new tmp-cam-153862523.jpg

Its treated me well but 2015 was when it started to show its age. Battery life wasnt what it used to be and using it to do simple tasks was sluggish. I bought a new battery which helped but the user experience was still less than ideal. I finally decided to install a custom rom.

I had a bad experience in 2012 when I tried to install a custom rom on my Galaxy tab 8.9. After using Odin to put TWRP recovery on my tab and I rooted it no problem. When I tried to install a custom rom my tab went into a bootloop. I panicked! I thought I bricked it! I didnt know what to do so I took in to repair. It was fixed but the experience left me scarred and I never wanted to try it again. In hindsight the reason it didnt work was because the rom was meant for an American varient of my tab.

I guess a combination of frustration and desperation gave me the strength to go through installing a custom rom on my phone. There's a lot more information for the S3 on how to do it, from xda as well as youtube. I used this video as a guide.https://youtu.be/cGFfCXZ5nUY
Installing TWRP recovery and rooting was a breeze. And to my suprise so was installing the rom. I installed CM13. It was a clean install, didnt bother backing up. All my important info is in the cloud.

CM13 wasnt perfect. The camera no where near as good as the stock one and Ive yet to find an adequate alternative, but the user experience was fast. Plus I was on the latest and greatest marshmellow! Today Im on CM14 and the user experience is even better. I installed an app called RAMExpander which uses internal storage to create virtual ram. So instead of 1gb of ram, with the app I now have 3gb! I still miss the stock camera app but nougat is amazing! The most polished and full-featured android has ever been! I bought another battery for my phone so there's little reason for me to change phones. (Unless the rumoured Surface phone is real).

I recommend to all current S3 owners to install CM14 and to not be afraid of installing custom roms. Just follow instructions and it will all work out :)

I've given my Galaxy S3 to a family member. Phone was still in working condition but I don't want to be a phone hoarder like some people on these forums. :whistling:

Discovered my grandmother still has her Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S5 in great condition. Busy taking care of her house while she is in Thailand for holiday. She recently got a Galaxy S7, and I guess she was meaning to give the S3 and S5 away to family members (my little cousins) as she left both out in the lounge, lol. Was quite shocked to find both in such stunning condition.

If she wants to get rid of it, let me know. I might be interested.

My sister still uses her S3 loaded with Marshmallow.
Last of the reasonably priced Samsung smartphones before they got greedy.

It's ages better than the later models with the ridged metal edgings?

Unfortunately she is not selling. We have some far less fortunate extended family members who she wants to give the phones to.

Sorry man. :(

Nah, even the Galaxy S3 was expensive in its time. My Samsungs start from Galaxy S2, and I've always had to take them on a top end contract, from S2, all the way to my Note 4 and now S7 Edge.

The Note series are where they began to charge too much, my Note 4 cost me more per month in the last 2years vs. my S7 Edge now.
