thanks, all this and I recently received an sms from mtn saying they have screen covers in stock. bad luck for me.

The AccuWeather widget on my lock screen is not updating. Any ideas to sort it out?

man it was such a small fall. it fell a few other times from the same or greater height - but not so lucky now, that big ass screen was probably face down this time.

My S2 survived massive falls. All four corners were dented to the extent of flattening out the corners. Dropping it was not an issue, it just handled them like a champ. I'm petrified of dropping my S3.
My mate dropped his iPhone 4 off the arm rest of the couch, screen cracked up like a spider web.

Yup. As long as it's not flat on the screen.

My desire would survive being flung across the room.

Colleagues iphone 4s has survived many a meeting with the floor, road in fact.

Rumour mill has it the Note 2 will have the same specs as the S3, but with a bendable screen. If this is true I might rather take the Note over the S3. With all the post about breaking / cracking screens I am a bit scared

It's just worth insuring a device like the S3. If you bundle it with your existing household insurance, you can insure it for as little R600 or R720 per annum, even less depending on all the factors. Over the life of the phone, one single cracked screen incident would have cost you less with insurance than forking out for it on your own. And then you don't need to send it anywhere else but the official repairers. Let alone losing, getting it stolen or dropping it in the toilet...for that small sum paid to insurance, you get 100% recovery.

i always drop my phones so now and then, but this is the first time i've ever damaged one. those sony ericssons were really good. crackberry also took a few drops and was fine. So i never felt the need to take out insurance. Got a quote now, R600 excess, 96 bux a month. think mtn insurance was cheaper.

by the way, although the screen is cracked, the 'touch' and rest of the fone is still fully functional. do i still need the screen and LCD behind it replaced,(likely with repair agents) or can the outside gorilla glass just be replaced?

Previous post in the thread said that the LCD and the glass was fused. So it would appear that you will need to replace both even if the LCD is fine.

My excess will still be about R1000 I think.

Yeah, they wanted to charge me R70 and R950 excess to insure my S3. I will take my chances. The phone will be worth peanuts in a couple of months anyway.
