I played around with my father in law's one this weekend. I can safely say I wont be getting one.
The design is terrible, those stupid grooved sides looks like they were designed by the makers of candy crush.
The phone is also a bit too long for my liking, I still prefer my S3 to it so I will be hanging on to that until the iphone 6 is released and I can decide between that and the lumia 930.

Just saying if all things are considered, like price, build quality, user interface, hardware etc. The S5 is an awesome phone; I just think there are better phones.

What makes them better, objectively?

Thinking about it, and the way that mericans sue each other...

It's probably a disclaimer in the meta data of each photo and video taken...

What about for a lack of eye strain and a battery bonus (lighter phone) all mixed into one?
Are you referring to the S5?
Is this your opinion or is it mentioned somewhere?
This is actually a huge factor for me.
I suffer from regular eye infections due to strained eyes and this would be good news.

Samsung explains the Galaxy S5′s “Camera Failed” issue

Last Friday, Samsung and Verizon officially acknowledged the “camera failed” issue that has been affecting a small number of Galaxy S5 customers. Although Samsung has said that it will replace any handsets that succumb to the fault, it doesn’t look like there’s much the company can do to advise users about avoiding the problem.

Samsung has narrowed down the cause for the camera fault, which turns out to result from the camera’s ROM experiencing a loss of data. The ROM is the camera’s internal memory, which stores important data for the camera module’s auto focus feature, as well as the CMOS image sensor. If the information stored in the memory becomes damaged or erased the camera unit ceases to work, resulting in the camera failed message that some users have been experiencing. Unfortunately, the damage is permanent as the data or memory cannot be replaced.

Usually memory like this is difficult to damage, but it is possible that interfering electronic signals or even ultraviolet rays could cause the data to become corrupt or erased. Whilst the exact trigger for the fault has not been pinned down yet, experts expect that something in Samsung’s new camera’s design is to blame, although this might not be directly related to the ROM. Clearly then, a full diagnosis of the fault is proving difficult, leaving Samsung with little choice but to replace afflicted handsets until it knows whether anything can be done to prevent further customers from experiencing the issue.

Perhaps most worryingly for customers, as well as for the company, this is that Samsung currently does not have a figure for the number of handsets affected. It is quite likely that a limited number of consumers across a range of carriers will continue to report the problem in the future.

If your Galaxy S5 is displaying the dreaded “camera failed” fault, Samsung has asked that customers call 1-888-987-4357 for help, or visit their carrier to arrange an exchange.

Would you buy one because you can take your phone into the bush for a week on a single charge?

How about actually really being able to use the screen in daylight for extended periods thanks to a lack of reflections and the brightness (which surpasses other phones).
Also, 3.0 JNCD...
And blacks are actually black.

Anyway, nothing beats it on so many counts but I guess the average user will never notice these :whistling:

I wouldn't take an expensive flagship into the bush... I'd buy a cheap dumbphone from Game. The S5 can't last a week unless it's in that emergency mode.

I've never encountered eye strain from a flagship device. Many phones have bright displays. AMOLED displays often have weird marks when showing blacks so they have their disadvantages.

The layman will not spare a thought for the display if it's good, and all the best phones have good displays. So no, the average user won't care.

What makes them better, objectively?

The OnePlus One is the best phone because it matches the specs of the popular flagships, has the best user interface and costs a fraction of the price. It scores huge points for the insane price.

The Z2 is my runner up because it has the best specs of any phone, is waterproof, doesn't have a bloated OS and looks outstanding.

I'm sorry, but I don't think the Z2's screen is up to scratch yet. The videos I've seen looks terrible, and they say that its a lot better than the Z1. The Z1 must be useless then.

Edit: Also not sure what this 'bloated OS' is everyone is talking about. I feel the S5's version of Touchwiz has a lot less bloat in it. No useless apps.

I have an Xperia S. My sister and her husband each have a Z1. BIL's Z1 has a cracked screen, it fell out of his pocket while he was sitting on some bricks, a full 5cm drop).

Anyway, side by side the S5 is 100X prettier than the flat rectangle with a rounded back Z1.
Feels better to hold as well.

AMOLED's (when calibrated right) will always yield better results than LCD's.

I see there are contact points on the back for a wireless charging back cover. Looking at sammys site I could only findthis awful looking cover. Haven't found much in SA about this.
