Samsung PS51F5500 Plasma

Don't think there's anything special with the cable - I got the 3 HDMI cable pack for R100 from makro when I bought the TV.

When your TV is connected to the xbmc, press MORE on your smart remote, then select TOOLS. On the tools screen, the first entry I see is set to Anynet+ (HDMI+CEC). Clicking this brings up a screen to toggle what you'd like to control (see attached screenshot).

Note that I didn't have to do this manually, the remote just started working as soon as XBMC was on.

Using the smart tv remote with XBMC did take a little getting used to since it has so few keys. Eg. Pressing the back key on the remote (labeled return/exit) brings up the context menu. To actually go back, you need to press and hold the same key. It works fine, you just need to get used to the keys. I've ordered the non-smart remote as well so it may be easier with that remote. Will find out once it gets here :)

What device is XBMC running on, it's a Raspberry Pi isn't it?

Called it, it doesn't magically work because of XBMC, it works because the Raspberry Pi has CEC support, all devices running XBMC won't work like that, the HDMI has to have CEC built in.
 
Well that explains it. Thanks Soul Assassin, that makes a lot of sense.

That makes me even more amazed at how much functionality they've packed into the pi

I think the colours are too dull and the picture too dim and was wondering if anybody has put some effort into fine tuning the picture settings? My viewing environment is well lit so I know I'm dealing with that but am expecting a bit more performance.

The problem is that when you find the best settings online, they are generally the best calibrated settings for movies, not for bright rooms. The film industry has its own standards in terms of colour temperatures and brightness etc. For the most detailed and best picture quality, a TV will always be dim, because the more brightness there is, the more washed out the colours become, finer details and sub colours get lost, etc.

This is the reason why plasmas more often than not have better picture quality, they are generally dimmer and each pixel is self lit leading to more black uniformity and higher contrast ratio. Compared to LCDs which rely on a backlight(s) to affect all/most pixels, which by nature, because they're brighter, leads to more washed out colours.

Without waffling on too much, and I'm sure you know all of the above, there are many different opinions about picture quality, and many different viewing environments.

You will want to avoid Movie mode, which is set around the above film industry standards. As Movie mode is generally the starting point, it will be too dim for bright conditions. The next step is to set to Normal mode. I would play around with the settings as you please, going into the deeper menus and enabling and disabling everything to test, load some media or pictures that you are familiar with and used to viewing in a certain way, and get them the way you like it.

If you are still not happy with Standard mode, and still want more 'pop', move to Dynamic mode and again, play around. It is heavily washed out though, so you will be losing out on the above picture quality and finer details. What friends and I have found with the PS51F5500 is that Dynamic mode, turned down, is quite pleasant for sport. Personally I stick to Standard and have managed to get the PS51F5500 to a good balance of picture quality and brightness.

Another tip is to use the Eco sensor to adjust the brightness/cell light according to how bright the room is. For day, you can set it to a high cell light, and for night, a lower cell light.

I wouldn't put it that high from day 1 though, but that's just me.
(I know these sets don't need to be breaked in as much, but I'd rather be safe then sorry)

Every TV supports HDMI-CEC.

However the device running XBMC probably doesn't which is where you are finding that it's not working. Not sure what bobbytb is running XBMC on but I'm guessing it's an appliance device or a built for purpose PC.

A good start would be putting off all the extra crap that alters the native image.

Dynamic Contrast Off
Black Tone Off
Digital Noise Filter Off
MPEG Noise Filter Off
HDMI Black Level Low

Most importantly put Energy Saving OFF especially if you are in a well lit environment.

I run the Eco Sensor with a Minimum Cell Light of 8 as lower than that just gives very dark results at night and that should boost all the way up to 20 in the daylight if required.

Wouldn't worry about maximum cell light during break in period, mine was on 20 for the first 200 hours or so and I was just careful not to have static images and constantly having output to the screen.

Can even run the black/white bars if you want.

Also be sure to put your screen fit to 16:9 otherwise Pixel Shift doesn't work.



At the very least get the standard Contrast and Brightness test patterns (why can't they build these into TV's by now?) and tune those on Standard mode for daytime viewing.

You can always setup Movie mode for night time and switch between them since your "normal" viewing area is so well lit the setups will be quite different.
 
Those noise filters aren't crap though, I think they do an amazing job removing that "fuzz" you see on really high def content.

They should only be applicable to bad signal television broadcasts of the SD variety.

Shouldn't do anything to your HD stuff.

No, it doesn't happen with SD content really as everything gets blended together - Pixel noise usually happens on Ultra HD quality stuff. go check it out.

Are you specifically referring toe MPEG Noise Filter I take it? Guessing you are referring to the colour dithering on flat colours where it shows up a slight gradient?

Ag it's a preference to me really I prefer not to have my image "manipulated" in any way, but yes the two Noise Filter options won't be the end of the world picture quality wise.

Unlike Motion Plus which makes everything look like a horrible B-grade movie.
 
Film Grain - That's the word I'm looking for.
